Changing plates.

I am changing a personal reg off my car onto my granddaughters car for her birthday which is in 2 weeks time. This morning 14/01 I have received the paperwork for both registrations to change so I can go ahead , my question is how long can I legally delay the change and if she or I get pulled by the plod in the meantime will they be aware that the change is pending via their recognition cameras? Agueroooooooooo. 93-20

I think in days gone by, you had to wait for the new tax disk that matched the car and the reg number. How that works now, I'm not sure, but I guess once you get the V5(s) that's the process a complete? Got - 2017 SDV8 Autobiography in Loire Blue

I didn't switch mine for nearly 2 weeks after getting the new reg. The V5 says you should do it as soon as possible.

I didn't swith mine for over a month after getting a new V5 (family crisis, didn't even make the To Do list...) - I had no issues, but this may just have been luck... 2007 Zermatt Silver TDV8 Vogue SE - now sold but was a great car!

A week or two will probably be ok but don't forget to inform your insurance Thumbs Up

Download form V317 from DVLA. I would send it off today with your £80 cheque and it should be perfectly timed for her birthday in 2 weeks. As mentioned, once everything has gone through they ask you to update the vehicles "as soon as possible" which is nice and open ended. Very Happy

I would send the paperwork off ASAP though. It's better to be too early than not have the paperwork back in time. 2006 4.2 SC

Put the reg number into one of the car buying websites - that will tell you which car it is attributed to on the DVLA database at that moment Thumbs Up

Thanks for the advice guys I've gone ahead and got the plates today and told her about the birthday present early. She's so chuffed so it's all ok but the secret had to be blown unfortunately. Agueroooooooooo. 93-20
