Can I pick your brains (me knowing nothing about bikes)

My son broke his bike at the weekend.. cracked the frame - which I don't think would be really repairable.

I would like to swap all his parts out onto another frame, but do I need to buy the same brand (Scott) or items such as forks,brakes,gears etc universal fitting.

Ideally you'll want to stick to the same frame as then you know it will all bolt off and onto the new one but there are likley other frames that all the bits will fit onto, it depends on the rear suspension mounting points more than anything.

have you checked to see if replacement frames are available? How old is the frame as well as if it still has its serial tag on the bottom bracket it may be under warranty or Scott may contribute towards a newer version of the frame? FFRR MY06 facelift With TDV8 Alloys Zeros/ATR's

As far as warranties go, I think it will be well out now - it's a 2006 model

It's always worth an ask as you'd expect them to last a bit longer

I have built a few road and mountain bikes up - the only part which is likely to be restrictive (but still not unique) is the rear suspension, otherwise parts should be easily "transferable" - but you'll obviously have to re-cable it.

If you are buying a new frame, and the old bike has had a lot of wear (judging by the pics), I would recommend looking carefully at all the other components, chances are some of them are very worn, etc and probably warrant being changed - also, there has been a lot of positive development since 2006 in terms of the performance of brakes and group-sets, etc, so perhaps it might be time to consider a whole new bike.

When you buy a new bike, the group-sets and finishing kit etc is bought by the builders so much more cheaply (because of volume), that unless you are building a very specific specification, or high end, its better to buy a built bike new.

If you did this, the parts of the old one would be likely to sell on ebay easily - I have bought and sold lots of bike parts on here. Likewise, if you are intent on buying another frame, don't rule out a second-hand one - just be careful.

To be honest, the more I think about it, and based on your pics, I am just not sure I'd be putting 2006, well worn parts on a brand new frame - it could end up as a bit of a false economy.

All the parts should be interchangeable with a new frame except the rear Genius shock, which is a specific Scott design for the Ransom (I have a carbon Ransom - awesome bike, I love it!)

I think I've see your bike for sale on eBay - there are also a couple of frames for sale if you go down that route

Personally I'm very happy with my 08 Ransom Ltd - it's awesome downhill!! 2007 Zermatt Silver TDV8 Vogue SE - now sold but was a great car!

I suppose ideally we should be looking for a new one, but he's really getting into road biking now, and would like to upgrade his road bike. So is desperately saving his paper round money.
I guess his biking is now 90% road, and 10% off road (local woods + Dalby forest), so not worth spending lots on this one.

I think a used frame, and 'budget' rebuild, could be the way forward for this one

Sounds like a plan - I bought a second-hand winter road frame off ebay, and its been fine

Ideally if you go for a second-hand one aim to pick it up so that you can give it a good look over to make sure there are no hairline cracks, or stress marks
