^ Imagine that ship in a slightly high sea Will, those apparent openings are just above the unladen plimsole line. In any sea they will be under water 50% of the time.....

They are openings for crew to handle mooring lines etc but there is a watertight bulkhead running across the ship behind it. Presumably the doors in the bulkhead have been closed to prevent water ingress.
