United Kingdom 2008 Range Rover Autobiography 4.2 SC V8 Buckingham Blue

Round the doors my 4.2SC is running at @15-17mpg, it is not cheap to run, but even my wife comments about the smooth ride. (22.5mpg on a long run)

It is a pleasure to drive and I thoroughly enjoy it, I use her as my weekend/special occasion car and use a Saab 93 1.9TID for work commuting and mundane stuff.

It is startling how quick they can move, TDV8's are impressive, supercharged are breathtaking, dread to think what a 5.0 SC is like Shocked

These are not cheap cars to run and in the UK cost me @£10 a week in road fund licence alone Evil or Very Mad being a 2008 model (past the 2006 date FOR RFL) but is worth it for the facelifted interior, terrain response, etc.

If you only drive @ 5000 miles a year, would be supercharged all the way for me!

Hello there Rob - maybe I'll be the first to mention this one - again !
By far the best compromise is the non aspirated 4.4 "AJV8".
You get a 300 and some ponies petrol V8 with no turbos or supercharger together with the ZF 6 speed gearbox.
They are few and far between (not sure about over in NI ?) over here, but are prolific around the world including North America and the far east.

Having owned one for 18 months and just sold mine, it had excellent reliability with good running costs. Before I bought mine I was looking at high mileage TDV8's and was glad I didn't go down that route.

Each contributor on here will be slightly slanted towards their own preference, but the car I had doesn't suffer from alot of the maladies of the most complex variants.

I changed from a '55' SC to a BAS remapped '07' TDV8 and the latter would embarrace the 'SC' in almost every circumstance sir...

The noise below 20mph was the only compromise... And the 600+ miles between fill ups more than made up for that!

Hey Rob, if you are a carfreak, just buy and don't get a cramp from all those "careful" comments, the normal AJV8 is a great car, simple and reliable, for a Range Rover. If you're more of an accountant and short on cash, keep on dreaming and buy something that is cheaper all the way. As said before, life is to short .....

You're probably quite correct Robert. Also worthy of noting that if someone is asking questions specifically involving reference to sums/ running costs, it is, although dull, helpful for owners to share their real life ownership and running cost experiences.

We paid a lot for ours and less than 2 years in, I can confidently say that maintenance and repair costs have been substantial. Perhaps we were unlucky but there are always problem cars in any batch so knowing how to root them out is no bad thing.

That said, it never actually broke down, we still have it and as you, me and others have said, they are great cars, whether petrol or diesel.

I'm certainly not dissing the TDV8 engine, I think its characteristics are well suited to the Range Rover, I know it can be uprated to SC performance and is certainly better on fuel, I went to a lecture by LR on the engine, they reckon they could get 750HP out of it, but it wouldn't last long!!

For a long time the TDV8 was my sensible choice, it was just the turbo failure risk that put me off in the end Regards

New Zealand 2010 Range Rover Autobiography 5.0 SC V8 Galway Green

For me it was the same as 3528cc, turbo failure on the one I already committed to put me of and I got a 5.0 SC instead and haven't regretted it for a second Smile MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!
Have the Faultmate MSV2 Extreme to be tinkering with the settings etc. !!

Another point to note, that the OP outlines the year, model and mileage of the RR of interest, asking whether or not it is a good buy. I suppose too that the answer to that question will partially depend upon the purchase price of the car in question.

The purchase price is £15000 and the vendor is known to me and trusted. The reason for sale is genuine as the vehicle is no longer required due to being surplus to requirement.

Many comments about engine/turbo problems. Was this 3.6v8 not a new engine developed by Ford/Jaguar at their new plant in Bridgend, S Wales and as such used in countless vehicles all over the world. Surely this would not be a 'duff' engine?

The 3.6 TDV8 was only ever used in the Range Rover and Range Rover Sport , no other vehicles across the globe got it and the replacement 4.4 TDV8 didn't even make it to the Sport. 2008 MY Supercharged

The seller and the reasons for sale sound A1. The prospective purchase price will doubtless be commented on by others but at face value it sounds not bad at all. Doubtless others will be more exacting in their replies regarding "what it's worth".

If not seen, the below L322 derivative / engine gearbox type timeline is helpful, as is the linked thread below that which asks what the best L322 engine is (opinions will vary):

Diesel engines:
Diesel/ 5Spd GM – 2002MY to 2006MY (UK 2002 plate to 2006 plate) = BMW3.0 TD6 engine using the GM 5L40-E, 5 Speed automatic gearbox.

Diesel/ 6Spd ZF – 2007MY to 2010MY (UK 56 plate to 2010 plate) = 3.6TDV8 engine using the ZF 6HP2, 6 speed automatic gearbox.

Petrol engines:
4.4/ 5Spd ZF – 2002MY to 2005MY (UK 02 plate to 2005 plate) = BMW 4.4 V8 engine using the ZF 5HP24, 5 speed automatic gearbox.

4.2SC/ 6Spd ZF – 2006MY to 2009MY (UK 55 plate to 2009 plate) = 4.2 Supercharged engine using the ZF 6HP2, 6 speed automatic gearbox.

4.4/ 6Spd ZF – 2006MY to 2007MY (UK 55 plate to UK 2007 plate) = Jaguar 4.4 V8 engine using the ZF 6HP2, 6 speed automatic gearbox.
