United Kingdom 2014 Range Rover Vogue TDV6 Aintree Green

Keith, I don’t know what to make of this – either you are a much more vigorous driver than me or I have bought a charmed car (or both!): my figures with a TDV6 L405 are nothing like that.
I’m a reasonably careful driver but not afraid to put my foot down when needed – my other car is a 440 BHP V8. But I have had a TDV6 from new, and from the start the average was very similar to the claimed 37.7 mpg combined (much to my surprise) and has just been improving since (I am now up to 13K miles/ 15 months). All figures from the trip computer. I do leave the eco function on (unlike some I really don’t mind it). Just back from two days up north 300 miles via A and M roads, average is showing 40.2mpg for that trip – roads were busy but a fair stretch of 80mph on motorway. I can’t quote lifetime figures – from memory it was about 39mpg until last month but then it went back to the dealer for a gear selector issue when they reset the trip computer and all records by, I assume, disconnecting the battery. My previous L322 V8 petrol was 19-20mpg overall, on same sort of journeys over 8 years, if that is any useful comparison for my driving style (and you really don't want to know what the Disco I V8 did...). I’m a big fan of the L405. The only thing I know of that may affect these figures is I don't do a daily commute in heavy town traffic, all my driving is pretty much on open roads with the odd town trip. Would be good to hear from other TDV6 L405 drivers to get a sense of what the range of experiences is. I’m a big fan of the L405 Very Happy (though not only for the fuel efficiency). And yes Stan it IS a proper FF! Norman

Just the facts...to amaze you even more that's not even the best Very Happy see below. Last 3 journeys were short trips to local shops etc.(very cold engine, due to overnight frost, short trips - hence the very high % eco driving style shown but the low mpg). The 40.2mpg trip was Trip A. Trip B is my overall average since the gear selector repair re-set.

my own personal opinion is that as the range rover before the L322 wasnt called a FF then the new shape L405 isnt either ..(as not to off topic this thread please start another) Wink ... - .- -.

I'm of the opinion that the L405 still qualifies as a FF.

It was only in 2005 that variants of 'Range Rover' badged vehicles started hitting the market in the form of the RRS - hence the proper Range Rover eventually being referred to as 'Full Fat'.
There was never a need to differentiate the P38.

The same principle still applies.

A lot of people I know have Citroen Berlingos - lots of discussion about MPG - I don't talk to them.
My car is older
My car cost more
My car costs more to run
But you won't catch me in a Citroen Berlingo anytime soon. Geoff

Yes. Why, were you thinking this affects mpg through weight? I suspect a minor issue. Norman

Hi Norman, yes, im impressed with my fuel consumption against my old l322, going to try the Eco mode as I spend a lot of time on the m25 so fast isn't really an option and it's interesting the difference a few mph makes to the overall mpg achieved from a full tank !!

I have a mate with a 3.0 405 who had an 04 TD6 previously (also from new) who averages over the past 11k in 9 months 41mpg... Thats both shown on the computer and worked out in figures too...

He did used to get mid 30's out of his old car! over 140k too Shocked

Interesting stuff Norman!

So we have identical cars - even down to colour and trim.

My journeys are local/urban most days with any serious mileage on motorways.

My trip computer tells me as follows:

So over my first 6543 miles that's an average of 32.2 mpg (with a quite conservative driving style)?

But my own spreadsheet of actual "brim-ups" and odometer mileage tell me it's much closer to 28.5 mpg. Got the car on 1 Mar 2014 but exclude first fill couple of fills since don't know how much of a "full tank" the dealer gave me!

No firm conclusions, I'm afraid! Does prompt the questions as to exactly how the computer does the calculation and whether it is somehow over-generous?

Keith

I don't know about the L405 specifically, but the general rule-of-thumb is the best fuel economy is the slowest speed in which the transmission will lock up in the highest gear.

Dial in the cruise control at 80 kph and you should be pretty good.

If you like experimenting and are on a LONG, flat motorway, you could always keep resetting the trip computer and get fuel economy readings over say a one mile distance at a variety of speeds. (Any errors in the computer should be constant. Your question didn't ask about the actual economy, just the best speed at which to achieve it.)

Let us know the result. Very Happy
