United Kingdom 2003 Range Rover Autobiography 4.4 V8 Epsom Green
Water coming into my Range Rover rear boot wheel recess

Hi All,

I've been recommended to come to this forum for advice as the people here are very knowledgeable apparently Smile I am hoping so. In summary, I bought a Range Rover on 1st December this year. 2003 (53) in Epsom Green, 4.4 V8, Autobiography, 103k miles. Full service history etc. It's been well looked after, usual wear and tear. I took in for a major B service last week at an independent land rover specialist and everything came back OK. No concerns RE the engine.

Anyhow, the main thing I noticed the last few days was a small amount of water in the rear boot spare wheel recess. I am talking 2-3 tablespoons so not loads but it is obviously coming in. I dried it out and checked again after some rainfall last night and there is a small amount of water there again, so having not driven anywhere, the water has got in. The carpets are not wet or the surrounding areas, the left and right cupboard sections in the rear that house the electrics are not wet in any way, or at least what I can feel and I have felt all round.

At the top end of the wheel recess when standing at the tailgate, there was a small hole (similar in size to 1p/5p coin) that had gone rusty. I thought originally that this was the source of the water coming in so taped it up temporarily to see, but as I have mentioned, after rainfall it is actually coming in from elsewhere and why I believe the hole was made to drain in the first place. The previous owner also had the compressor for the suspension replaced a year or so back, I am assuming possibly because this got wet?

Is this a common problem? Any advice on where this is likely to be coming from?

Apologies if I have posted in the wrong section, just let me know.

Many Thanks.

Scott

Welcome!! Great choice of car!! can't say I have had that problem with mine. there should be a rubber bung/gromit for that drain hole.

Thanks.

Do you know where I can get replacement rubber bung/gromit for that drain hole?

I have two holes, one at the top of the tyre well and one near the bottom, presumably there should just be the one hole with a bung/gromit in?

I am thinking of having the rear tailgate seal supplied and fitted by an independent land rover specialist, all inclusive of VAT and fitting £125. Not sure if this is good or not.

I'm also not sure if the seal can be fitted by anyone or whether it requires and LandRover specialist? I can get it from a LandRover main dealer for £80.02 but have never fitted one so am unsure whether it is straight forward or not.

I had the rear tailgate seal replaced today. It may or may not solve the problem but it's a process of elimination. The engineer said another place is the top hinges and where they are bolted to the bodywork. Water can pool around those and cause leaks into the spare wheel recess.
