Sounds like another option using the same principle. But how do I feed the PRE AMP OUT from the new unit into the TAPE FEED in the old one? To my recollection the old unit has only two connections.

In my scenario, you will be cutting the rca pre amp out plugs off the head unit loom and putting the wires into the right pins on the connector on the bm54.

If you want to do it with connectors, you'll have to buy another later bm54 and the aux in loom. Which seems an expensive route to a similar result.

Hi I think that this is the sort of thing that you require, I have tried to find one on ebay Aus, but as I'm in the uk its proving to be a bit harder as it keeps showing me stuff in the UK, even though I'm logged in on ebay Aus??

This will plug in to the CD changer wires and will give you 2 phono connections, then you will need power for the new radio, and also you'll have to tap the Ibus, you should be able to do this by joining in to the 3 pin wires for the adapter, white /grey/yellow. Yesterday I couldn't spell Engineer... Today I are one!

Of the 2 connectors you have at the front of the car, some of the wires are tape output that feed the boot. You will need to look at the wiring / connector diagrams in Petes thread.

Or look at bmw related stuff on the Internet.

Or if you put female rca connectors to the wires in the car, you won't need to cut them off the head unit.

You could try it all in the boot first to see if it works.

You are simply replacing another sources pre out with the pre out from the new head unit.

Miggits idea is a quicker way of using the cd as the source feed, but you will lose the CD player........

Looks like I could have a couple of options. My first attempt is to plug the new unit as Ironhorse did in the back of the car. He passed me some very valuable info of how I should do it. If that option doesn't work, then I guess I'll have to look into the source feeds from TAPE or CD and cut some wires (or buy connectors). For now I unplugged the cd-charger and still have the old unit in the dash.

Update: After trying Ironhorse way of install, I can tell you this:


The loom I got with the new unit matches the existing one in the back. That new loom splits of into a black socket (POWER), a blue socket (CONTROL) and white socket called "ILL + (which I don't know where to plug).

Good news is when connecting, the unit switches on/off like it should be (so no extra 12v connection needed) and seems to work fine, cd plays, recognises iPhone, etc...
Bad news is, I get NO sound, none of the buttons on the old unit and steering wheel works (except the dial and MENU) and the DSP seems to grey out after one minute. I unplugged and replugged the crossover-box as I was told but no changes.

One time the CODE-option on the screen was available but have no clue what it does.

Also in the back there two disconnected antenna-coaxial looking looms (brown one and a purple one). Any idea if this is normal or not?

Some pictures to make it clear what I'm dealing with. It's pretty clear that unplugging the radio-loom disconnects the DSP. I can only hope that finding where that ILL + goes would solve that (DSP + steering wheel control)

I also saw that when the cd-charger is not connected, it won't appear in the menu on the old unit. Does that mean if I try to get the feed of the CD connectors, I won't be able to select it on the old head unit in the first place?


This is the new loom that seems to fit the existing connection that went to the stock radio.

On that new loom, there's one connection that remains unconnected and I have no clue where it could or should go. It's labeled "ILL +"


The only similar connection I could find was on this, which was attached on a second loom that was provided with the unit.

While going through the cables I also found this one which wasn't connected to anything.

I was also wondering, if I this doesn't work and I have to get the feeds of CD charger/Tape, how do I connect them to the new loom. Looks like I have 4 outputs on this unit. Would I just have to leave the REAR L and REAR R right out of it? Also, how would I connect the steering wheel to the radio if all the connections stay in the front of the car?

Not sure how iron horse connected up.

You have lost the options on the original screen as they have been disconnected from the iBus. They talk to each other on the network and the volume and the steering wheel controls use it. The bm54 polls the DSP to see if it's there. Units that do not identify themselves on the network show in grey instead of white.

You will have to leave the IBus intact to use the old system properly.

ILL + will be a feed from the car for illumination, so I'd imagine the screen on the new unit would dim when you put the headlights on.

That box thing you have with 3 series on could do something to allow the new unit to talk on ibus, I've no idea.

If you look inside the original big black plug you took off the bm54, are there not 2 smaller sub plugs inside you can move across to the plug from the new head unit and then connect it to the bm54 ? That may keep the ibus signal connected.

You are just going to have to try things. You need to look at the info in Petes post.

Ignore the unplugged wires in your boot. The big black plug and the purple type coax are pre wire for the telephone kit.

You will have to pick up other connections at the front of the car with the cd or tape source method, though the ibus is there to pick up steering wheel etc. you will need power and bits. Don't know exactly as I've not fitted a different head unit. I was just looking at the options for getting sound through.

Have you only got 2 pre amp outs on the new unit then ? Not sure that is enough.

And a unit needs to be connected on the iBus to be available as a source, as you have seen. So if you use the cd source, you will need the changer connected.......

There is the phone and tv sources, but some say you have to select it again each time you start the car. Your gonna have to experiment here......

There's a a red (10) fuse thing in the old radio unit itself but can't see how this could be placed in the new loom. So basically you saying I should try keep one connector in the Bm54 and one in the new unit, right?

No but I thought the connection out of tape, cd, etc... had only two signals. That's what I remembered from the wire diagrams.

Which means my remaining options for that setup would be tape since keeping the CD-charger with the old unit and the new unit, I run out of space.

If you look at the original bm54 connector carefully, there are 3 parts to it. Like 3 looms if you like. Not the fuse.

2 of them come out and could go across to your new connector. Then reconnect.

You are right with the pre amps, only 2 channel source input. I came back to post that and saw your reply.

You could put the old screen in the boot and keep the cd ?

I'd try all the theory in the boot and then look at doing a proper fix. 2011 Range Rover Vogue SE 4.4 TDV8

Update:

The red box (BMW3 series) does allow the steering wheel functions.

Just tried to leave the 2 plugs (12 pin white and 12 pin black) in the original radio but no success. So if I can find the iBuss pin in the remaining pins and somehow connect that one to the original radio, my problem should be solved. At least that's the theory. Right?

Just saw on the diagram that the two 12-pins are only sound signals anyway. So the iBus is in the 16pin I presume.

Thanks! By watching your link, I realised that my diagram missed pin 9 on the 16pin, which is the IBuss.

So just to be sure I fully understand. If I only take the pin 9 (Ibuss) on the 16pin connector and keep that one on the original radio but all other in the new loom, in theory my problem should be solved?

Ah, just read your post....

The iBus seems to be pin 9 in the big part of the connector so won't be there..... Rolling Eyes you could move it across ?

Does the new bit piggy back on the old to feed speaker inputs only then ?

Ie no matter what source you pick on the old screen, the sound will always be from the new android unit ?

So it would override the output from the bm54, not the input to it, if you see what I mean, or is that more confusing ?

Just thinking how it's intended to work in a normal system, rather than what we are trying to achieve. 2011 Range Rover Vogue SE 4.4 TDV8
