tdv8 3.5 10 MY Not Starting on Cold Start cycle

Its taken me a bit of time to get to the bottom of this but i think i am getting somewhere now.

i have the same problem to the letter as this post on RRS forum: http://www.rrsport.co.uk/forum/topic20008.html

in essence; In the cold weather we're having at the moment, mine doesn't always start first time from cold. It will fire up and run for a second or two, then cuts out.

it will do this upto 6 times. each time with the cold start delay.

Once the vehicle has been used for the day, or there is a start that does not bring up the 'cold start' process it will start no problem.

i dont think it is a battery drain issue: http://www.fullfatrr.com/forum/post297432.html#297432

i have looked at the FSR, and changed it when considering it to be a battery drain issue. i did think i had narrowed it down to the FBH having been run first and it lowering the battery but that is not the case.

i am now thinking Glow plug or the relay. seems unlikely that all the glow plug's have gone down so am thinking relay but would appreciate any pointers. Cheers

James

It almost sounds like there is a fuel delivery issue. Enough fuel to run it for a second or two and then stopping. Maybe a non return valve allowing the line to partially drain ?? MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!
Have the Faultmate MSV2 Extreme to be tinkering with the settings etc. !!

thank you for replies

if it was fuel how come it starts no problem if there is no cold start procedure? even if left for a few days?

if it does a cold start it will struggle on a daily basis. Cheers

James

The starting and then not running for more than a second or two says fuel starvation to me. If the glow plugs was an issue, the engine wouldn't fire or fire with lots of smoke. Although it could be that the motor management sees too many values out of wack (in case of a few bad glow plugs) and then stop running but I'm sure that would throw up fault codes.

I would also suggest to run the engine on the best diesel you can find (the BP or Shell etc. top product) and run special fuel cleaner for a tank or two. Also I'd suggest to change the fuel filter if that hasn't been done for a while. MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!

It's very seldom that glow plugs are required in our climate to start the engine, they do help when the temperature drops to just below zero but the engine should still start easily without them. I have only once waited on my glow plugs heating before starting the engine on my TD6 and that was when the temperature dropped to -17 °C

i has just had a service where they (Matfords LR) added a diesel cleaner to the fuel, maybe that doesnt like the cold.

Last week was all -1 or 0 cold starts when it wouldnt go.

started today and yesterday, but i pushed the button without the pedal pressed first to let glow plugs do there thing, then started. the glow plug indicator light has taken longer to go out last two times. Cheers

When the weather is colder the light will take longer to extinguish as it takes longer to reach its predetermined temperature.

Diesel cleaner shouldn't make any difference, when I change my fuel filter I refill it with neat diesel cleaner before fitting and it starts as normal

i have not had an issue with diesel cleaner before just looking at options.

it seems if i try to start it with foot on brake and push button it seems to 'rush' through the cold start process and only runs for a second or so.

if i just put the ign on first, then start it, then it doesnt come up as a cold start, and fires straight away.

i am confused by it all! Cheers

James

Hi James,
In many years of working in and around the automotive service industry ( including managing a repair shop for several years), my belief that there are next to no coincidences when it comes to work done on an automotive system has grown to an absolute conviction. If your RR had no prior probs, you had work done on the motor and then have probs, they were caused by the work done.
It doesn't need to be the cleaner. It could be something as simple as an improperly reconnected electrical plug or vac hose.

Go back to the dealer and complain.

Hi James

Did you ever get a solution to this - my car a 2010 vogue se tdv8 is doing exactly what yours was doing - starting and then immediately dying out

Did you ever resolve this?

yes i did it was the battery. even after fitting a new battery it struggled after a while.

if i put the ignition on without foot on brake then waited 10s or so and then started it it always started and ran properly so i had a work around, try it.

my conclusion was that the vehicle took a lot of juice on initial ign on to run self checks, this coupled with immediate starting of the vehicle allowed the voltage to drop below what the vehicle ECU needed to see to continue running hence turned itself off. by turning ign on and letting things sort themselves out for 10s and then starting meant the voltage drop wasnt big enough to cause it to turn off.

my symptoms were it started strongly no lazy stater etc.

by changing to an Odyssey battery it resolved the issue once and for all. Cheers

James
