When copper coins are not copper

I know - I have probably been living under a rock for ages.

Just took some change from my pocket and placed on desk near a magnet - "Copper" coins (1p s) stuck to it!

Closer investigation shows the change over from copper happened some time between 1987 to 1995 as 1987 coins don't stick to magnet and this is the only sample set I have.

Does anyone know the changeover date? Does anyone care?

I know ... I'll get my coat.

In 1992 they started to be made from steel with a copper coating - before then they were made from Bronze and again not copper.

Therefore, being pedantic about it, they are now more copper than they were previously Very Happy

Crap isn't it, I thought the whole idea of a coin was it was worth the value of the material it was created from unlike a note which is merely a promise. Big Cry

I tell ye, this country hasn't been the same since they gave women the vote Twisted Evil

The steel pennies were a cost saving, as they predicted that they would become worth more in copper scrap than their face value! Like old silver florins. & gold sovereigns!
Oh, and the notes are made of cloth! ( technically)
Soon to become plastic, like Australia.

thrupenny bits were bronze / brass weren't they? I think you meant the silver sixpence, bit bigger that an easily lost modern 5 pence piece! And funnerly enough made of silver until the late 40's, I think, I'm not really old enough to know that one, I was only 5 years and 4 days old when we went decimal. Yesterday I couldn't spell Engineer...
