I thought about trying to get a td6 with the gearbox already done but it's still not ideal l. I mean has the job been done right, who carried the work out and the fact that if the box has a warranty from a transmission specialist in London and I'm taking the car up to Glasgow it's not really worth anything. Plus the fact with the ajv8 the fuel cost will be much the same as I do very little mileage.

Also if any you guys are thinking of selling I'd say nows the time to do so . Almost every ffrr I have called up about has sold !

That's like not buying a tdv8 because of the turbo issues........ It's making me question what I have next, after my very reliable td6.......,

Have a drive of them all....... Enjoy the search.

I'd rather have the jag petrol with the extra gear than the early bmw petrol, but it could cost a bit more.

For my ten penneth, as an experienced engineer (deranged one for wanting another RR, I think the men in white coats are coming soon Wink )


For months it has been "sensible head" buy a TDV8 but having spoken to all my LR friends, and local LR Independant garages about both engines, and in the end I have chosen a Supercharged engine and will pick her up next week.

This is based on the risk of instant turbo/engine failure of the TDV8 3.6 engine (I can't afford a 4.4, apparently they don't have the same issue, but need a turbo return line uprating.) I also didn't want the constant risk/gamble £5-7k on an engine failure.

I have run a softdash 3.9 Vogue SE Classic for many years on LPG, and may convert this one, but at the moment will see how we go, if the mileage demands go up.

I do not profess to be an expert and still learning, but I am an experienced engineer.

Many TDV8's appear to be fault/failure free, but the risk appears to be real........

I have read everything on this forum (great info available) and obviously my own contacts, my LR Indie had a TDV8 in and the expected bill was £7k. Another local specialist also suggested the Supercharged was more reliable than the TDV8

It appear the source of "most failures" are initial turbo failure with very little or no warning, the result can be 1 / 2 turbo's plus the risk of the engine hydraulicing via intercooler filled with oil, oil starvation of the other turbo and engine possible.

We all have to make a decision and each to our own, ultimately you spend your money and place your bet TDV8 or Supecharged.

I know there are other engines available on earlier cars (don't do BMW's)

I popped into my Indy last week. Bizarrely, he had 2 x FF TDV8s arrive on the same day, both with catastrophic engine damage due to turbo failure. As you say, £7k ish to fix.

As you will see, there is plenty of banter on the petrol v diesel debate on here. I'm not anti diesel at all, I quite fancy a TDV8 and I was asking him what should be done on a preventative basis to stop the above happening. His suggestion (just his view of course) was regular engine oil changes with good quality oil, regular EGR cleaning and ideally new turbo actuators at 100k miles as they are prone to stick.

It's a real shame as I've heard that the TDV8 is a great engine and (relatively) good on fuel. For me, it's too much of a risk though, a £7k repair bill means it's a write off in reality......

Also remember that forums and Indy's and generally full of tales of woe. I'm sure there are many TDV8s out there that have gone on to a ripe old age with no issues at all. 2006 4.2 SC

I agree entirely, I have driven TDV8's and thought it was superb, if the money had been in my pocket a few months ago I would have bought the Stornaway Grey Vogue SE from the local dealership without a second thought.

However, now I have had time for a second thought I have changed my mind.

I started with a dream of a Supercharged car, then "Sensible" Head said TDV8, and now because of the TDV8 worry it's back to "SUPERCHARGED" Twisted Evil

People I know think I'm Bonkers Rolling with laughter
