I know what you mean on the Michelins - I still have 5-6mm left - I have 4 new Pirellis in my shed that I bought because the price was good, but I might not even need them for another year

In an ideal world I'd have thrown 4 AT's on, but as I have just started up by myself, parting with £600, was more than I could bare! However I would say that there is no way on earth You'd get me driving a car with the AT's on the front and Pirelli's on the rear. At least I've got the super grippy tires on the front!
I can imagine that the other way round would be like trying to turn a corner in mud with all the axles diff locked, trust me it don't work  Yesterday I couldn't spell Engineer... Today I are one!

Really !

AT's & Pirellis are so different it could be scary. Most advice I've ever seen is that you put the grippy tyres on the back - the rationale is that the vast majority of drivers can react to understeer way better than they can handle oversteer. Not a very hairy chested macho opinion, but most likely true.

I'd rather buy part worn tyres than mix them to that extreme.....

Understeer is for poofs! I was brought up on oversteer, MGBGT V8 the dogs in the dry and the scariest but fun thing in the wet, especially when I put Michelin's on the back, power slide all the way baby
Anyway over steer is easy to stop, take your foot off the loud peddle and it soon drifts back in line, dipping the clutch has the same effect, but I'd like to see you do that in a FFRR!
I did have a car that understeered big time, a mini cooper that had a limited slip diff, there is nothing like trying to go around a corner in a straight line. That lasted 2 days before a std diff was fitted! Yesterday I couldn't spell Engineer... Today I are one!

Oversteer in a FF Whatever next!

Must admit your right there Craig, especially when you look at what I'm driving, not exactly a fire breather. That's why I've got the grippy tires on the front, under steer is a real possibility, but over steer, you'd need cast iron underpants just to try it  Yesterday I couldn't spell Engineer... FFRR, oversteer/understeer...............

What is the world of FFRR coming to, i thought these 2 tonne tanks were for gently cruising

and do different makes of tyres really make that much difference between the budget and the posh ones.

as i have seen budget ones at £90 a corner

salb different tires do make a difference to the handling of a vehicle. Some tires are of a soft compound which sticks to the road like glue, but wear out a lot quicker than a hard tyre. The trick is to find the right compromise. And that is before you go in to the the in's and out's of which type of tread to use, the more off road like the tyre is, the less rubber you have in contact with the ground.
But you can also have too much rubber in contact with the ground. Great in the dry, but not so in the wet, watch an F1 race when the grounds damp and you'll see what I mean. The slightest bit of moisture and it acts like a super lube, and off they go.
Land Rover would have done a lot of research in to the best all round tyre for the most likely use of the car. Which is mainly road use. Some of us do go off road and find that the factory tyre choice is a little wanting in the grip department, and therefore we have to sacrifice the good road manners to gain better off road manners. The further you go with better off road manners, the more likely you are going to slide on a wet corner  Yesterday I couldn't spell Engineer... Today I are one!

I'm going to throw a spanner in the works with a... Yokohama Advan S.T. vote.

Had them on several SUVs and wrapped our current Vogue in them too. Smooth, quiet and grippy at the same time.

They don't last very long though so take it for what it's worth.

We have a 90 degree left hander at the bottom of our hill, due to weather, camber and surface no matter what tyres or condition of them, you can get spectacular oversteer if not careful or know what you are doing....gets the dog walkers thinking takes me back to my beetle days coming out of wet roundabouts on opposite lock, much more spectacular in the FF

edit - of course I am not condoning this behaviour just pointing out its not always the tyres

on the tyres question, in Germany, (so I'm told,) a puncture is never repaired, and the tyre is replaced, along with the other side on same axle, with same make tyre. to eliminate wear difference, grip, etc. some cars have manufactures suffix branded tyres, like MO meaning Mercedes only or AO for audi and a star for bmw mini etc.

Johnboy, I have had it a couple of times over the last 8 years and always on the same stretches of road, a bit disconcerting at first but easily caiught.All tyres good, no excessive speed etc. The roads it happens on are full of cars in fields when wet....ah bonny Scotland In fact on my road I probably tow 4 or 5 a year out of the ditches/fields. Its not the tyres
