Well it's only taken three months but I have finally found a MemoryMap.apk file that actually works with the Android head unit, for some reason when I tried to download it from the google play store it kept saying I didn't have a compatible device, even though I had downloaded lots of other apps OK... it just didn't seem to like MemoryMap, looked around for the file to load it from the SD card and found a fare few but they all crashed or didn't load.... had a look last night and found a new one and..... it works.... loaded an old overlay and can see it, it knows where I am and moves when I do....

Looks like I might have to buy some new maps as the app won't work with the old ones!!!!

If your wondering what MemoryMap is, it is a navigation software that uses OS maps and has the ability to create and use tracks and routes, it ensures that you are 100% ON a greenlane or other right of way....

Also fitted one of these today, runs lovely and cool now...

It is really useful to know this thermostat solution exists - well done for finding and highlighting it.

It sounds like it might solve the knocking sound on my V8 which thinking about it is more prevalent when my engine gets hot.

Just wondering why BMW ran engine so hot - I can only think for emissions / fuel economy which may mean you need to replace original thermostat for MOT?

What are your thoughts on it?

They put a 110deg stat to reduce emissions at part throttle openings, it will have minimal, if at all, effect on the way they measure them for an MOT....

If you watch the video he states that it eliminated the knocking at full temp so may work well..

My thoughts are that 110deg is just too hot, it effects all the hoses and other rubber and plastic under the bonnet, funnily enough the engine seems to be more relaxed and perkier now it is running cooler...

I have the 80deg stat from him and mine is running very close to the 87.5deg temp at which it goes closed loop so I may have to up it to the 87deg one, luckily it uses standard early BMW stats so they are readily available.

It would not be possible to refit the old one, you have to grind it off the housing, also you will throw a fault code but it does not illuminate the MIL light, mine has had the fault for some time now and doesn't seem to effect anything else.. Pete

My gut feeling is that 108c is fine when engine is new but would rather it is cooler 90000miles later for reasons you mentioned.

Sacrificing some mpg is not a problem because high temps on old mechanicals is the sort of issue that keeps me awake at night.

If mpg bothered me I would not have a V8

hows your heater performance now with the new stat ?
i did the mod that puts the electric stat down to earth so it thinks its under load and opens it at about 95 deg (if i remember correctly)
done it about 4 years ago with no issues except it seems heater needs to be turned up another notch to get the same amount of heat out of it
dont get me wrong heater still blows out red hot at full temp just seems the colder settings need to be one notch higher than before

It's certainly not as hot as it was.... thank god, it was ridiculously hot before, thought it was going to melt the vents...

Not noticed if I have to have it up higher as I haven't really driven it much since I did it...

Do have to say I hate climate control, I want to decide how hot the air comes out of the vents, so I am always messing with the temp dial to get what I want..... Pete

Still really enjoying the thread and I too have now joined the FFRR fold .

I know you fitted a CB in yours but was wondering how you mounted the aerial? Or do you just use a mag-mount?

(I marshal at Comp Safari's, etc and am considering fitting a MSA radio)

Any advice would be gratefully received.

Couple more jobs done recently, one of the rear lower hub rose joints started squeaking like mad, it was starting to scare children and old ladies....

A quick call to Ducky Dan and I had a nice new pair of joints, clips, nuts and bolts so popped down and borrowed one of my mates ramps to do it... (Hips getting really bad now, 1st new one will be fitted 17th Dec, that's me out of washing up at xmas )

I had also picked up two new original Land Rover, marked as made my Bilstein, rear shocks from RRG on here so took them along as well...

Well the shocks were a 10min job but dam those old bushes didn't want to come out, snapped an extractor on one and had to use oxy on both to get them to free off.... finally they were both done and time for a test drive....

What a difference, didn't think it was too bad before but it was so much smoother, a fantastic difference....

Then the following day I got a bong of doom.... Engine Failsafe was displayed although the car drove totally normally....!!!???

Got home and plugged in the faithful IID tool and it came up with

475 Throttle pedal position sensor switch A circuit fault

477 Throttle pedal position sensor switch B circuit fault

I had had one similar fault ages ago but it cleared and didn't return...

A quick look on ebay and I picked up a second hand one for £20 from a guy who had bought a supercharged pedal for his....

Fitted it this morning and yet again a massive improvement, it is much smoother and progressive and the car feels like it has got 50bhp more... It's like having a new car....

In fact it's so much more powerful that when you give it some beans, but not even full throttle, the LPG system switches to petrol because it thinks the tank is empty as it can't supply enough LPG for it....

I spend ages fine tuning the fuel map for it.... going to have to do it all over again now

I noticed that the old pedal was starting to break at the bottom where the plastic hinge is, I took it apart to have a nosey, I always thought the kick down switch at the bottom of the pedal travel was just that, a switch, in fact it's just an indent for the pedal, kickdown must just come at 100% throttle...

So, two relatively cheap jobs done and the car feels so much better, just need to fit another starter motor and it may even start when it's hot.....!!!!! A second hand one turned up today but unfortunately the bearing behind the drive pinion was goosed so the guy is sending me another one, should be here Fri....

And just so I'm not bored I've got another FF in the garage that I'm fitting one of the Android head units to....

All in all I'm a happy bunny at the moment....... Pete

Few jobs added to my list, electric fan and thermostat are in the top of the list as heat is a big concern since i live in Saudi Arabia and i do take my FF to desert every weekend .

I have got the X-Type fan , would you please explain how to make the connection on Fan cables and ignition switched wire from the ECU box to the controller , do i need to install a relay ?
