Lego trains

Hi Guys,
I haven't had Lego since i was young (round about 20+ years). My son (5) is loving playing with all my old Lego at his Grandma's house, which I'm very pleased about as i love Lego. I actually cant believe the trains worked first time after being sat in a box for over 20years! Now that's a quality toy!

My question is regarding the new stuff. I've bought my son a new train set for his birthday but it uses batteries and an IR controller. Does every train need a new controller or can I (he) run 2 trains off the one controller? It looks like hes going to get a load of Lego for Xmas and birthday so could do with getting up to speed before i have to unpack and build it all. [img]http://www.fuelly.com/driver/rob2529/range-rover[img/]

Sorry, don't know.

I'm just going to put in a vote for a BIG set of regular Lego. Then he can build whatever he wants instead of just what the instructions say in a specialty set.

And Daddy can then have his own pile too. Mr. Green

No idea about the controller but I can almost feel your (soone to be) pain.

What's the sharpest thing in the world?

A Lego brick when you step on it with bare feet whilst on your way to answer the God of Wazz at 3 O'Clock in the morning. Thumbs Up

Actually my Lad has 2 sets with that IR controller and they don't seem to interfere with each other. But that's not to say it's not switchable internally.

No. stepping on an upturned 3 pin plug is definitely worse than a lego brick. My Motto: If you are going to have one, have a BIG one!

If they are the digital type, you should be able to control more than one with one controller. If analog, you will need one controller per train. If it has an IR system, it sounds like it's digital.

Far cry from my original sets 171 and 182 (yes, I still remember the codes), which were battery operated and stopped via a magnet on a Lego signal or swapped direction by a plastic lever nudging an upright Lego brick.

PS: Watch the Lego Movie. It is awesome.

You can control more than one train (or anything with a IR receiver/motor set in it) with the controller - it has a 4 way switch which corresponds to a switch set on the IR receiver.

However I would have thought that most Lego train sets come with a controller with them, or do they have "add on" trains without a controller?

Excellent stuff! Martin what do the 2 control knobs do? Can one controller do 8 outputs? [img]http://www.fuelly.com/driver/rob2529/range-rover[img/]

For the trains, I don't know. But there are two outputs per IR receiver - a red channel and a blue channel.

So yes, in theory a single controller can operate 8 outputs.
