That sound not bad il need to look into that. What happens if it's a private sale is there company's that will still offer an extended warranty ? Also is your ffrr on the original box or has it ever been replaced ?
I do always like to have a rainy day fund put away for any unexpected repairs.

You can retrospectively get a warranty whether you buy privately or from a dealer. The warranty company might ask for the car to undergo some form of health check before they agree to cover it. The age and mileage of the car might dictate whether, how long, cost and what level of cover any warranty company might offer.

Most warranty companies will require evidence that manufacturer approved service and maintenance schedules have been undertaken before indemnifying any otherwise valid future claim. As such, they will normally require you to prove that such works were carried out a VAT registered garage by means of receipts and/ or service booklet stamps.

You'll pay approx a minimum of £850/year for a LR Select extended warranty with no breakdown cover. The other aftermarket warranty companies might cost less.

You can usually get an instant heads up quote from non LR aftermarket warranty companies as to the level and cost of a warranty. The quote should link you to their cover level and to their terms and conditions.

Yeah sounds like they'd be full of loop holes to escape paying out any claims ! Think I prefer just putting money into a pot myself for any repairs etc.

As pld118 says, I have to prove my car is properly serviced, so can't do oil changes myself anymore....

You can't ring up and get cover with the company mines with. It has to be from when you purchase the car at a dealer supplying their warranty. It's then extended.

I am now considering holding back some money (around 2-3k) and getting a slightly older slightly higher miles ffrr. And have that money put away as my gearbox/air suspension fund. That way it takes the worry away and just take it for granted that I will be putting a new gearbox in it and the time I get out the original is just a bonus. Would still go for the 4.4 v8 as you can pick them up very cheap around the 100k mark. There are a few I have saw that are a he'll of a lot more tidy than some I have saw with less miles just depends how they have been used I suppose motor way miles or short trips. This is the only way for me to have complete piece of mind and without saving up another year or so. To me I would rather have one a year or so older, 20k more miles but has a sound gearbox and money there to sort out any air suspension issues. To me that's the main worries all the others I don't mind sorting out myself I enjoy working / servicing my cars anyway as long as it doesn't cost the earth !

Anyway I have found a garage local to me that has a 4.4 v8 2004 and a td6 2003 so going to see them soon. Think il avoid going at the weekend and go next week some point. Just hope they don't mind me taking the 2 out for a drive !

also i have read about the front diff problems and when buying ask if it has been replaced. is there any symptoms if the diff is bad ? is it an expensive fix and how do i know if its totalled ?

Now leaning towards the td6 again ! After reading some bad things about the 4.4 v8 timing chain and vanos issues. The Zf gearbox was what was drawing me towards the 4.4 but it seems it doesn't come without its problems. Just the gearbox and turbo being the main worries with the td6 but at least the engine is solid.

Anyway going to see a td6 and 4.4 v8 tomorrow final found a garage that has the 2 in. They seem to be selling very quick at the moment, I called up about 3 on auto trader and all had just sold over the weekend !

saw this one but is this the aj v8 ? as its still the 4.4 i thought the ajv8 was a 4.2 ? also i see that its the 6 speed auto wich i like. i take it that this is the more reliable transmission and engine ? i don't plan on lpg so the aj v8 seems the better option so long as i can get the cash together !

the 4.2 is the engine they used for the SC

well my options are spend 8-9k on a td6 pre facelift holding money back for gearbox replacement or spend 10-11 on facelift ajv8 6 speed with between 90k-100k miles ( saw a few nice ones )

i understand there will be lots of other things to sort out which i don't mind and can live with as i maintain and repair my cars myself its just the transmission that i would want a specific fund for

No matter which one you get, it's pretty inevitable you'll have issues at some point.

Personally, having seen all the horror stories of the gearboxes on the TD6, I'd avoid them like the plague.
