Really need to go and get a test drive in them both. But the gm transmission in the td6 is a bit of a deal breaker looking like it will definitely be the v8 but no harm in getting a shot in both before making a final decision |

Whilst the gearbox can be an issue in the td6, the zf box in the V8 is not exactly bulletproof. Plus the petrol units do seem to suffer from overheating issues and dodgy PCV hoses etc. the td6 lump I recon is a very reliable unit and pretty good when remapped. I'm a bit biased now, mainly due to the fact that if I travel somewhere I don't have to save up for the fuel to come back

Agree with Mjd above, the petrols are smoother, but there are fixes available for the Gm box, a recon is around 2k and they can be fitted with an uprated torque converter and different valve block made by sonax which should make them much more robust.

My pals got his £200 magic box on and a remap for three years no problems and it's the quickest td6 I've ever seen off the mark not a lot can touch it, it's pretty amazing tbh when it can do 60 close to 7 secs I kid you not _____________________________________________________

Agreed all transmission have their horror stories the. zf box in my bmw is a is a cracking box my old 3 series had 140k box was smooth as silk and had never been serviced, yet if you search the forums you will find plenty horror stories. I do believe that's the case with everything after all people don't generally post on the forums about how well there car is going it's always just the problems that they will post up.

Going back to MJD's point above ref petrol vs diesel - there are significant differences between the two 4.4 V8's available, not least of which is that they have different gearboxes . . .

I greatly prefer the Jaguar engines, but if you're thinking of adding LPG, get a BMW one. Cheaper car. Seems to do better with the LPG. |

Just a quick question on the transmission i read that the 4.4 had the 5 speed zf 5hp24 up until 2003 then it changed to the 6 speed zf 6hp26 . is this right ?

^^ Mark - no, that's incorrect. The gearbox / engine combinations are as per my original post near the start of this thread.

Ahh ok . Hmm well after doing a little more research I am once again stuck between the td6 and 4.4. the 4.4 transmission obviously has it problems as well. To be honest I probably wouldn't feel comfortable buying a ffrr Whether it be the td6 or the v8 without at least 2k sitting spare just in case the gearbox went bang. However by what I have read it seems that although they both have transmission issues with the td6 it's a certainty it will fail but with the 4.4 you have half a chance of getting some life out it. |

Whilst I understand the comments coming about not worth the paper it's written on etc, I got 12 months warranty with mine when I got it from a local car dealer 3 years ago. It's been renewed every year and is reputed to cover mechanical failures etc. I got cover from Nov 2013 to Nov 2015 for £425. It was previously that for the 12 months before.
