looking for some advice on buying l322

Looking at buying a range rover l322 my budget is 9-10k so looking at 02-05 80k-100k miles.

Currently driving bmw 3 series 2006 but i have always fancied a range basically just wanting so advice on what to look out for I know to watch out for Air suspension, gearbox, and turbo (if td6 model) anything else i should keep an eye out for ?
I have been looking at both td6 and the 4.4 I don't do a lot of millage as i work from home but i really don't know if i could run the v8 i mean 20mpg at best ! although it is temping as you can get a nicer newer 4.4 for the money I also read that they have a more reliable gearbox ? is that the case I just assumed they all had the same ZF transmission ?

I realise that i won't see great mpg from the td6 either with the kind of driving i do ( short trips ) so would there really be that big a difference in running cost ?

i have also noticed that everyone advises to hold off and save for the tdv8 but its just to far out my price zone so its really just between the 4.4 v8 and the td6.

look forward to hearing some advice from you guys.

Welcome Mark - I've a spare 5 minutes for typing . . .

Engines / Gearboxes / Model Years:
Td6 / GM 5 speed box / 02 - 07 MY 02 to 56 reg
BMW V8 / ZF 5 speed box / 02 - 06 MY 02 to 05 reg
JAG 4.4 AJV8 / ZF 6 speed box / 06 - 08 MY 05 to 07
JAG 4.2 AJV8 / ZF 6 speed box / 06 onwards . . .

There's loads of stuff to look out for with these cars.
In a nutshell, though, I'd advise to look for a car with few owners accompanied by loads of paperwork ie proof of contented careful ownership.
Anything first registered before 23/03/06 will NOT cost you five hundred notes to tax . . .
I've had an 06 MY 05 reg Td6. Bought at 75k, it was faultless in my 18mths of ownership other than a flat battery. It had been correctly serviced and I did the same. It returned 25ish mpg knocking about.
Current car is an 06 MY 55 reg AJV8 4.4. Again, bought at 75k - faultless other than a flat battery ! I don't do many more miles either, but this car takes no time at all to warm up - plus, I have no gearbox worries . . . I get up to 20mpg for my normal driving & 23 on a run.

I'd recommend either to be honest and can't comment on the other choices - but someone will . . . soon !
If a seller claims to be offering a warranty take it as read that the kind of failures you may encounter will not be covered. Range Rovers, even the reliable ones, will remain expensive to maintain.
Once into ownership they are superb and very difficult to replace - I speak from experience.
Happy hunting ?
Paul

Thumbs Up Where do you go after one of these . . . ?

ahh so the td6 has the gm 5 speed. well that has put me right off the td6 I have avoided the x5 3l diesel for this very reason have heard many a horror story about these boxes and know a few people that have had x5s and the gearbox go pop especially if you try and service them to late ( after 40k miles ). the v8 is definitely looking like the better option - reliable gearbox, less miles and younger car for the money. the fuel cost is a concern but i suppose when you weigh it all up theres not much in it they both have their pros and cons but i must admit the fact the td6 has the gm transmission is a worry !

Could always consider a 4.4 with LPG conversion?

Robert on here has a nice 02 4.4 for sale -£5800 I believe and it's a good one!

Sorry Roberts one isn't LPG but you could convert it within your budget if you wanted. I had an LPG few years back (wish I'd never sold it Big Cry ). I was getting around 150miles for 40 quid of LPG if I remember correctly. That was around town driving too

Wow you really can get a nice v8 for the money just found a 54 Vogue with only 54k miles for £9k and it's only 3 miles from my home address !!! Ahh pity I have not sold my car yet or I would have almost definitely bought it.

Been doing some research on the running cost difference from the v8 to the td6 and from what I can see when you take into account the saving on the purchase of the car, saving on servicing, saving on the price of petrol vs diesel. Plus the fact the v8 has more reliable gearbox and no worry of turbo breaking. It seems to be a no brainer .

I looked at my current cars mpg stats - bmw 330i combined 30 mpg while the range is 17.4 mpg combined. I fill up usually once a month at £60-70 so I am expecting to be doubling that £130 a month for fuel I don't see being a problem especially due to the fact I'd be driving a v8 range ! I mean I have dreamed of owning one for as long as I can remember so I really don't imagine I would grudge putting fuel in it ! Don't get me wrong long trips down south to London etc would be out the question but I do that at most twice a year so I could live with just getting train or plane !

may try and get a test drive in one this week ! Anyone want to buy a 3 series lol !!!!

Last time I saw fuel less than £1 was about 5 years ago or longer!

Cheapest I've seen in and around Glasgow was 120.9 for petrol and 124.9 for diesel.

Please tell me where this filling station is! I'll hire a tanker and fill that too! Thumbs Up Got - 2017 SDV8 Autobiography in Loire Blue
Had- 2008 TDV8 Vogue SE in Java black
Had - 2007 S/C in Stornoway Grey
