Switzerland 2007 Range Rover Vogue TDV8 Stornoway Grey
Before you get under a car supported by a hydraulic jack...

This is the nose of my trailer supported by a 3500kg hydraulic trolley jack. There's less than 100kg on it.



This is a few hours later.



It's not an old jack. It was fairly cheap - think halfords quality. Maybe it has a fault, although it pumps up easily enough. Either way, you don't want your perfectly servicable jack developing a fault while it's supporting your Range Rover and you're underneath it.

Always use an axle stand if you're removing the wheels and going underneath the car.

....and to add to the excellent words of wisdom!

If you ever take a wheel off store it under the car - beneath a jacking point. That way, if your jack / axle stands fail the wheel will take the load and reduce the severity of your injury. The added benefit is that using man-maths you can then justify buying those extra wide alloys you've had your eye on Thumbs Up Thumbs Up

I had an idea the other day...

Going to get a standard railway sleeper and get it cut into 4 pieces.
Then going to chainsaw cut a slope at the end of each one.
This will then give 4 mini ramps in which a vehicle can be driven upon.

If you don't require the raised height and simply wish to work on a corner with the wheel off, use aforementioned blocks to chuck under sills to act as insurance in case it slips off the axle stands.

Each block also has the potential to be modified to create a wheel chocking effect.

Im using my old pitch pine beams from the house decorating (renovation really Laughing ).....make great ramps Thumbs Up If it dont work.......burn it!

If the IId tool cant fix it.......burn the FF.

If the FF cant be fixed......buy a Land Cruiser!

If the LC cant be fixed..............................................BUY a horse !!

No good if you want to take the wheel off though. I personally feel there's nothing wrong with axle stands. They should never fail if they're in good condition and are correctly installed.

That jack probably only needs bleeding. Open the lowering valve fully, pump the handle up and down 5 times then re-test. The cheaper jacks don't have the auto-bleed thingy as I found out a while back. Thumbs Up

I have use the farm jack/hi-lift jack on the 90 challenge truck in a very similar way Thumbs Up Laughing If it dont work.......burn it!

Going under a car thats on axel stands is safe as houses, but like houses they need a good foundation, so make sure you are on concrete and that the car is sitting safely on the stands. When I lower the car on to stands, I leave the jack 1/2"" below the car and give it a dam good shake. That way if something has gone Pete Tong the car will jump back on to the jack and not hit the floor! Once I've given the car a good shaking and it hasn't moved, it is safe to approach!
Oh and when I say shake, I mean like you would a wee person who wont shut up, only you wont get arrested for shaking the car. So if your a frustrated parent... put your car on axel stands.... might help Wink Yesterday I couldn't spell Engineer... Today I are one!
