Silly Question

First, I'm NOT going to do it. I'm just curious.

Various action movies (Italian Job, etc)and Top Gear have shown cars driving onto trailer ramps and airplane loading ramps while the ramps were still moving. Could you do that in an FFRR without breaking something? Once you get two wheels up the ramp, the front and rear wheels are turning at vastly different rates. That's no problem in a two wheel drive car. In a 4x4 with a lockable centre diff, that diff (open, of course) is going the go into overtime. Could it cope? What about the FFRR? The car would detect the slippage and automatically lock the diff, wouldn't it? Thoughts? I'm definitely NOT going to test this out.

Definitely don't try it. You can't (shouldn't) even brake test at MOT unless it's a 4 wheel roller set. My local place uses some gadget in the passenger footwell while they drive the car and do a brake test.

That's a very clever question.

Most people are thinking - 'how do they get out of that'

....not what wouldl happen to a 4 wheel drive system driven up a moving ramp.

Of course, the mini's got thrown off a cliff, so it wouldn't matter in the film if the 4 wheel drive system blew if they'd used a 4 wheel drive car instead of a mini, so long as it got them up the ramp before it blew. But if you designed a ramp where all 4 wheels got on at the same time - problem solved.

I will now think on this for many hours instead of trying to resolve quantum mechanics with relativity.

Thanks, everyone!
Kurt, sorry to have put back scientific advancement so many years. Crying or Very sad

welshdragon In theory, yes. If the car was travelling SO fast that the difference between ground/car and ramp/car became insignificant, then you're right and it should work. But at that point, having successfully mounted the ramp, you are going to run out of space VERY fast. Mr. Green

I guess I'll just have to continue driving responsibly. Big Cry Mr. Green
