Timing Chain replacement/Engine Out

After a few posts on the ''what did you do today topic'', and consequent request for a dedicated post, here goes my story.

Once upon a time....
Over the last year or so, my RR experience took a sharp left turn and all sorts of goblins started appearing.
First the suspension went bust with a ruptured front air strut and a problem with one of the sensors. Tow it!
Then, off went the battery. Tow it again!
Then, off went the alternator, Tow it yet again!!
Over a course of 4 months!!!

Then, when i went to pick up the car with the new alternator, the mechanic told me, you're F_*?`ed. you hear this noise? fffff fffff fffffff fffffff?
It's the chain going loose, or the tensioner gone. You gotta replace it and it's an engine out job. I even went to an known LR workshop guy to ask if it was really true that the engine had to come out, and indeed it was true. Official LR numbers rounded at 40-50 hour Job. So looking into a possible expense of around 4000€!!!!

So, off the car went the local Auto trader to get sold!
As the offers were minimal and most of them lowballs, in the end, and the sound was getting worse, I had to take the plunge and proceed with the jobs.

So here goes the picture story of the visits I've made to the shop.

First all the front of the car had to come out to reach the engine, radiators, grilles, etc... etc...

Then, after the engine came out, everything is more visible.

So, more news and pics will be coming in for those interested....

Good Pic's, it must be a bloke thing but theres nothing better on a friday in my opinion than looking at step by step pictures of a nice lump being removed! Thumbs Up The difference between theory and reality is that in theory it will work.

I don't think he's done it himself.... "So here goes the picture story of the visits I've made to the shop."

Heck of a lot of work though just for the timing chain... wonder what oil it's had in it and how often it's been changed... Pete

Very interesting, hell of a lot of work for a timing chain, but with all the front off the car could you not replace
the T/C without taking the engine out or am I missing something

I'm guessing, looking at the pictures, that the engine has to come out in order to remove the sump.
I don't know that for sure but can't see another reason. Mind you, whilst it is out I'd be sure to stick a new torque converter in there!!!

Yep ok, I see that but, looking at one of the pictures showing the right front corner of the engine it looks like you can do the same as on the old classic drop the front line of bolts out of the T/c cover leave the sump in place
hell of a thing to have to pull the motor for a timing chain

Why is that because it looks like you have access to all of it from the front - what's in the way that requires engine removal?

I'm with you guys but unlike the classic which had a central cam between the V the TDV8 has two banks of cams to drive and it does appear that the chain passes through the block - similar to the Stag V8.

Still doesn't explain why the engine has to come out unless as mentioned the sump has to come off in order to remove the crankshaft timing chest cover.

I'm very surprised they haven't undone the front pulley before taking the donk out though - them things are FT Big Cry

But you don't the book says you do on the classic but in reality you can remove the T/C cover without removing the sump

I'v never pulled a TDV8 apart (plenty of 3.5's 4.6 ) but I still don't see why the engine has to come out in a TDV8

as our Pauline says "Please explain"

I've never pulled one apart either but just looking for reasons why his "experts" all agree it has to come out.

Can't think which donk it was but I remember one where the oil pump was driven by the crank (it was built into the front cover) and due to the pick-up pipe the sump had to come off before the front cover. Could it possibly be something crazy like that? Not sure but with LR who knows - I mean, fancy having to lift the entire engine / gearbox assy just to change the gearbox oil filter Big Cry (Disco 3).

Either way, think I'd have done a whole lot more "un-doing" before lifting it out. Mind you, these guys have probably done plenty and know what they're about Thumbs Up (fingers crossed!).

Ever tried taking the injectors or cam covers off a TDV8 with the engine in place? Wink

Quicker and easier to lift the engine out Thumbs Up
