Well, I tried that new Giant today courtesy of my lovely local bike shop. Mixed bag, I hated the disc brakes and the huge jump between the two chainrings, didn't like the gear change much either.

£1650 and I found loads not to like.

What do I do now. Graham

I returned to cycling 4 years ago and had the same dilemma, hence the fact that I now have 3 road bikes.

I have my original, which like another posting on here is an Orbea Aqua, with a mixture of 105 and Ultegra, on a compact chainset with Mavic Aksiums and decent finishing kit - upgraded over time. This is my "intermediate" bike, so light'ish, but not too fussed if it gets, wet, and its very comfortable - did Hadrians Wall to central London in 24 hours on it last year.

I then have my winter bike which is a Ribble (their classic blue winter frame) - this is again a mix of Ultegra and 105, but this time on a triple chainset - I'm never as fit through the Winter, so like the "get me out of jail" use of the granny ring from time to time. It obviously has mud guards on it.

Last but definitely not least, I have my best bike which is an Orbea Onyx Silver - again running a compact set up with 12 - 25 sprockets on the back, and again Ultegra - I think its good enough.

I've two sets of wheels for this one -the Cosmic Carbone SLR's shown in the pic and some American Classics as my second pair.

More choices...!

Oh, and needless to say, despite nice big garage - the best bike always lives in the house
