My current quad has given up the ghost and will soon be going to quad heaven, I have been looking around and thought I would ask on here before I buy the 'wrong' one.

basically I need 4WD, a reasonable sized engine as we are on the side of a hill, duties are minimal, towing a small hay trailer, harrowing, spreading etc.

Any help would be appreciated as I am getting confused by all on offer, budget about £3/4 K, also doesnt need to be road legal

We've got a Suzuki King Quad 300, had it for over 17 years and it's the best quad we've ever used.

The King Quads now come with engine sizes from 300cc to 750cc, all sorts of options from selectable 2 wheel or 4 wheel drive, plus diff lock, high-low range selector and its great for towing small and medium sized trailers.

Our machine has run faultlessly apart from needing servicing occasionally, and a new part for the 4 wheel drive selection that I fitted myself.

There's plenty of new and used models for sale, so you should be able to find one within your budget.

I've got a Honda Foreman 400. It's not new by any length of the imagination, it's a 2001 I believe.

I bought it from a friend of mine whose had it since new 4 years ago, other then a few engine oil changes and a set of tyres I've not had to spend a penny on it. Great machine, plenty power, plenty grip and great stability.

The newer Honda's seem to be much higher then the old ones, I've looked at changing a few times but feel far to vulnerable sitting much higher up.

You'll get a Foreman 400 well under your budget too!

P38s are also really cheap and much comfier and warmer, or cooler during the summer!!

Seriously, a Disco 1 300 TDI SORN for half the budget you quoted, especially if you're not worried about cosmetics. Other than fit through a skinny gate, what could the quad do that a D1 can't?. P38 is also a nice solution, but are they a little more to run?

+ 1 for the Suzuki King Quad.

They have a few small issues - the 4wd selector motor can get confused and believe it is in 4wd when it isn't and won't reset. Dealers sell you another motor but no need - just manually reset it and you'll be fine for another few years.

Also, if you notice it gets poor at starting then rip out the multi-plug between the alternator and the battery and hard wire it. Dealer fix is a new alternator (wrong term I know but can't think of right one) and wiring but no need.

I ran a 700 King Quad for a few years and it was great - towing huge trailers, very supple suspension, comfortable and 'kin quick when it came to catching ewes at lambing.

One piece of advise would be whatever you choose get a screen fitted - you really notice rain and midges without one!!!

Have narrowed it down to an 06 Foreman 500, an 11plate 420FM and a 13 plate King Qiuad 400..... any pointers?? thanks
