They had to leave. Chased out by villagers carrying pitchforks and torches.

Correction. Chased by 20 year old soldiers.

So, ones who weren't even around at the time. The Argentian government was pretty apologetic, by all accounts.

The 928's plate was changed to another to avoid the tensions, but that didn't work.

TG team now back in the UK. Si. <This is my name.

And all this without JC opening his mouth...... Imagine the nuclear fallout had he spoken out there.

This would have probably happened without the number plate to be honest. 2011 Range Rover Vogue SE 4.4 TDV8

I don't believe for 1 minute the number plate was a coincidence.... They probably thought it would be anonymous in Argentina and only the Brits would get the "joke". Previously..

Surely the number plate means nothing to the Argentinians ?
If it had the letters MAL thereon, maybe I'd buy some of this fuss . . .

I don't know why I watch top gear these days, as it has had its 'stag-lads'-day I think. those overseas jaunts are worsely staged than that 'lizard lick towing' cr@p. and they ALWAYS have a painted spelling gaffe, with a door open and a rude word remaining. So, I believe the number plate was WELL in on the act. the cars always fall apart, and they always run into each other, and they sabotage each other. Nothing is ever missed by the cameras!
Should be renamed, 3 idiots abroad! what was an interesting show, has become too routine now. mind you, I would like to be the tyre supplier to the track days.....When JC goes, (soon) it's due for a re-think. Fifth gear is more sensible. and easy on the Vicky-eye!

Easy on the eye ?? Huh?? Shocked Erm, no ta. Think I'll pass this time.

Tiff is as much of a "Has Been" as JC BTW and about the only interesting presenter is Plato. No, still prefer TG to 5th.

TG is light enterainment centered around cars and three ageing men having a bit of (usually) harmless fun. I like watching it from time to time when I feel like some mindless relaxation. I especially like the travel programs as you get to see some of the countries they are going through, the antics don't do that much for me.

The southern part of Argentina is still very very sensitive to the war over the Falklands/Malvinas. When I was there in March you can see it everywhere around you, monuments, slogans the lot. When talking to the people, the subject comes up very easily and how the islands are theirs etc.

Unfortunately the current government seems to be doing exactly the same as the military regime that instigated the invasion in the 80's. Trying to divert the attention from the government screw ups to the common enemy, the UK who "stole" their islands. Very blatantly obvious but it still works like a charm. My money is on the BBC production team not fully appreciating the current sentiments and a local journo seeing way more into the plate than is there.

However, normally they have to buy local cars (the Southern Africa challenge, the Amazon challenge) so why now all of a sudden UK plates when they are going through Argentina along the way. Not very smart IMHO OR done on purpose by the TG (production) team. If that is the case, then they should be reprimanded because they have put the entire team in danger. Probably the people in the production team are quite young as well and don't realize the severity of what happened at the time (To be honest, I had to watch a documentary to refresh my memory as well AND I have been trying to manage a project in that area where we were discouraged from using British firms and British firms that "have worked on the development of the Falklands/Malvinas" are banned by law anyway).

So there may well be a concious decision made to use UK plated cars and that was NOT very smart to start with even if it was done on purpose and they did a risk analysis (probably not).

It could have gotten quite out of hand if you bear in mind that the soldiers that fought the war in Argentina are the parents that raised the 20 somethings that were in the mob. Those 20 somethings have probably been raised with some horror stories and I am very sure they were exactly like my generation was about WW2, as I also was quite anti-German in my younger days based on all the stuff I heard about WW2 from my family.

Imagine what would have happened if someone beat some of the team quite badly and those people would have had lasting after effects of worse died. It could have happened and those are some pretty serious concequences for "a bit of fun". Especially for the family and friends of the potential victims. Granted it is not at the level of going into Iraq and Syria these days but still a punch or kick in the wrong place and someone can end up in a wheelchair or dead. It happens too often these days with street violence and could have happened here as well.

So all in all not very smart of the BBC TG team to do it like this. Next time better get cars with Swiss license plates or CD plates Smile Smile Smile MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!

But fifth gear has this guy, and I have no idea why he exists on the show. I'm not sure why he exists at all. He's completely crap every time he's on the screen.
