Some people need to get some perspective.

Linking that number plate to the Falklands is incredibly, incredibly tenuous. However, the insulting roadside graffiti is not.

I think I know who has reason to be upset.

I have little compassion for their "sensitivity." It was a needless, unprovoked war. Argentina still still refuses to respect the democratic will of the Falklanders and still tries to undermine their economy. (Dad recently took a cruise in the area. The choice was whether to visit the Falklands or Angentina as Angentina refuses to allow cruise ships to dick that have or will visit the Falklands. Buenos Aries is rather bigger than Port Stanley...)[/b]

I have been down south in that part of Argentina (and Chile) and the war is still very much alive there. I also recently watched a documentary that put the responsibility for the war squarely with the then ruling military government and their big mistake to think that Britain wouldn't do anything. Unfortunately Britain was in the same dire straits at the time (according to the doco) so Thatcher had the perfect opportunity to distract the British from their own economic problems.

Now I do firmly believe that the license plate was pure coincidence and that the Argentine journo was clearly "trying it on" in a country that is in terrible state again. They have again MAJOR economic problems and the government is clearly trying to use the same diversionary tactics as in the early 80's. I don't think they will try to go to war again (can't afford it) but they do use the Malvinas/Falklands to give themselves a bit of air to breath.

As for my experiences there, I love the Argentine people I met and worked with. They are very friendly people and that part (Tierra del Fuego) is incredibly beautiful in a very barren harsh way (we had snow at the end of summer, not even autumn yet). I would love to go back there for a little vacation trip like the Top Gear team did.

It is sad that this sort of war mongering is still going on, purely because a government can't get their act together (the Argentines complain bitterly how their country is in ruins while the Chileans are doing really well although, according to the Argentines I met, Chile does not have as many natural resources as Argentina does, they blame their governments for serious mismanagement).

As for JC and the Top Gear team, love them and I hope that they continue making the show for a long time . I would have loved to do this trip in an old Porsche 928 (?) as well . MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!

Yes, I remember Argentina being absolutely beautiful: hills, mountains and lakes. When I went (many years ago) BA was the largest city in the Americas, edging out NYC by a few million. Tiarra del Fuego is also spectacular, but very harsh.

Absolutely right, the Falklands is often used to distract the population from problems at home (and yes, I bet Thatcher was happy to do the same).

I'm not fond of politicians, but Argentina seems to have suffered with some of the worst during the 20th century. In the early 1900s, the French had an expression which translated as "rich like an Argentine." Argentina entered the 20th century as one of the richest and most prosperous countries in the world. The politicians soon fixed that...

Yes, it's a country screwed by its politicians. Chile's doing well and Brazil is becoming an economic powerhouse, meanwhile Argentina is blaming all their ills on some islands that have very little economic value.
