Anyone know much about chainsaw's?

My chainsaw developed a life of its own today, was using it to chop up a few trees that came down last winter.

The chainsaw seemed to stick on full throttle so I switched it off, but it continued to run. I know diesels can sometimes run on their own oil, but a 2 stroke petrol?

Other thing that is strange it that it will not cut a straight cut, is that a twisted chain bar? 56 TDV8 Vogue SE

I recon it's either the battery or the air suspension pump, that seems to be the things that go wrong the most  Pete

Might be best Puting it in for a service. They are dangerous if not spot on.
I got rid of my petrol one and bought a Lidl electric one for about £45 and 3 chains for a fiver each... Great bit of kit. Previously..

My petrol strimmer did something like that, switched off and kept running, came down to a broken wire to earth from the switch. I would check the wiring first, not much to go wrong with a 2 stroke engine! If it dont work.......burn it!

If the IId tool cant fix it.......burn the FF.

If the FF cant be fixed......buy a Land Cruiser!

If the LC cant be fixed..............................................BUY a horse !!

as above re. running on, the kill switch, is usually an earthing switch to the ignition wire. switching off, earths the wire, if its has shaken itself to a disconnection, it wont earth and it wont stall. I had this on a chainsaw I had, it then started to run faster and faster, I put it down, and walked away, I eventually threw logs at it till I 'killed it'
I'm not so sure about the sawing straight.... try reversing the chainbar, to see if it saws the other way. It's true that new saws are affordable.
-and the tool you want to be the safest in your arsenal, would be the chainsaw, closely followed by the 9 inch angle grinder.
both have savage reputations...my personal rule with both, is 'never above the beltline' you can hop to a phone if the worst happens.

Welshdragon & Johnboyairey - I will check for an earth problem, I aaumed that turning the chain saw off would break the ignition circuit, but I can see how having a switch that short circuits the ignition circuit would work.

Contra - I would much prefer an electric chainsaw, but I would need 500m of cable. Plus I would probably end up electocuting myself.

^ What about using a generator with it? If I am away from home I put the genny in the boot and take that for a power source.

I seem to remember on my old one, there was also a little lever that stopped the fuel flowing (it basically clamped down the plastic fuel hose).

Another option would have been killing the air flow if you can get to that easily by holding something over the inlet.

All to be done with the chain brake on of course !!! MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!
Have the Faultmate MSV2 Extreme to be tinkering with the settings etc. !!

I am too lazy to drag my generator out of the garage, it weighs a 'ton' (well proably 50kg).

I'm moving house soon which has about half an acre. Last week I bought a new John Deere X300 tractor mower ( too big but had to be done!) the next on my list is a collection of 2 stroke petrol machines; strimmer, blower, hedge trimmer, chainsaw etc.
However, I'm reading that decent battery powered tools are getting better all the time and have many benefits such are quieter, convenient and lighter . I am aware the maximum time between charges is about half an hours use, but has anyone any experience of these battery garden tools? Current MY2020

Chainsaw fixed, a mass of sawdust in the switch preventing it from working properly. Chain brake is knackered so need to get that fixed and the idle speed seems high now, maybe a service might be worth it.


x300 is a big machine indeed, I have a X165 for 2 acres of grass, much faster the mulch than collect.

I stayed away from the battery powered stuff as I have 4.5 acres in total. One thing I have noticed is the petrol powered over the mains electric kit I have is it is much more powerful and gets the job done 3-4 time quicker, especially the strimmer and hedge cutters 56 TDV8 Vogue SE
