Swapping the battery on a 5.0 SC

Right,

I tried to do this today as per the Wiki and it's a little more complicated with the 5.0SC as you will see. Big Cry

After securing the bonnet up in access mode, and going through the disconnection routine of the battery (which BTW I don't think mine has the explosive device on the positive terminal that my TDV8 had, and also doesn't have the bulkhead jump starting location) I also removed the pollen filter box for easier access (Thanks Craig).

However, in front of the battery in the battery box area is a large ECU with a cooling fan on the back of it, and you cannot remove the battery unless this is removed. The only other alternative is to remove the scuttle panel (which involves removing the A trim pieces, windscreen wipers etc to get it off.)

The ECU has 2 large multiplugs going into the top of it which are clipped in, but there is a metal bracket that overarches the entire unit, maybe for security and this is secured by a hollow star torx bit. I tried all of mine and none of them would fit, it looks like a special LR fitment to me that only the dealer can get out. It looks like a star torx bit, with a centre point in it. So, without being able to remove this, you can't lift the battery out because there isn't enough room for clearance.

What started off as a simple job as usual became complex, just because of one damned fixing. Now I guess I shall have to pay the Dealer to do this work. Seriously annoyed Censored

In the picture below you can see the ECU and housing in the forefront, the torx bit is obscured by the cables going into it on the right side, in line with the Land Rover sticker on the battery.

In this picture you can see my star torx bits, on the lower row with the hollow centre. None of these fit, it seems to be somewhere between a TX30 and a TX35.

Adam, that has 5 lobes rather than six.

Wiki link.

No idea where you'd get one. Sad

Sorry to hear Adam, wish I was closer so you could borrow my "security" Torx. Had the same issue with the 2006 SC so bought a set on the net. Good luck, they're easy to find, believe my set actually came from the UK so you should be able to find them and get them quickly on ebay.

Pretty sure this is the kit I got at first but does not have the 5 lobe torx so I got another set.

What about this Smile Smile Smile From the pic it doesn't seem to have the 5 lobe version either

This could be the 5 lobe version, difficult to see

Or this one, here it actually says it is the 5 lobe design.

SWMBO doesn't understand that tools are the lifeblood of an engineer. She still doesn't understand why I insisted on keeping my container full of the tools/bike etc. in storage since "it can't be worth paying for the storage for years". Now I have all my tools again, I realize how wrong she is on this particular item.

Already fixed lots of things, put the Kawa back etc. Worth many times the storage cost IMHO.

Anyway, tools in the workshop garage never ever go to waste in my long and "interesting" experience (but then my dad is exactly the same so it must be nature as well as nurture).

Hope that the new battery got all fitted and the gremlins went off to some other poor soul !! MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!

A word of warning to anyone looking to swap their battery in their 5.0.

Eurocarparts will tell you that the Bosch S5 will fit, and other members on here have bought one, but the battery tray on the 5.0 is smaller and it won't fit.

You also need to have a set of 5lobe torx security bits if you want to DIY fit as there's a whopping ecu in front of the battery that needs removing before you can lift out the battery. Discovery 4 HSE

The 100ah s5 is smaller and would probably fit. Think its 013 size. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

I always go for the biggest capacity battery in any car to have extra juice when it counts. So I would go for the biggest that would fit. So thanks for the update Adam !!! MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!

Adam, I feel your pain chap. The front brakes on my wife's XF use a 9mm Allen key to undo the calipers.

Now, for the age of a donkey (and then some) all allen key sets have come in 1/2mm sizes up to 6mm, then 7mm, 8mm and 10mm. 9mm has never been in any of these sets but it's not something you expect when simply setting up for a pad change. You can order them from EBAY but local motor factors, Halfords etc don't do them. I was lucky enough to see a Snap-on van on my way back from Halfords but he relieved me of 26 quid for one 3/8" drive allen key to fit a ratchet. Now I remember why very few of my tools are Snap-On. Laughing

But this whole ethos of inventing another tool just to make life awkward for non-franchised places and home mechanics is more than a little tiresome.

If the Land Rover people are reading this please explain why a regular Torx screw would not have sufficed? Or even a regular 10mm hex head bolt?

Blimey, something that should be so simple turns out to be a right pain in the a$$.

I bought a tap which needed a 9mm allen key. I took it back and got a refund as in the whole store they didn't have a 9mm allen key.
