Wheel balancing.

Do any members have experience, or had wheels checked and balanced, utilising the Hunter Road Force Touch Balancer GSP9700?

Better than dynamic balancing it is claimed, as it measures radial force variation and lateral force which standard wheel balancing does not. It is capable of identifying hard/soft and flat spots. JLR are but one manufacturer who apparently use them it is claimed.

However, the dealers do not have them it seems as far as I know.

I had a 'pot-hole' issue one dark night and NSF has been checked (tyre, rim, suspension) and both fronts rebalanced.

Rears not checked and have vibration through the seat, which seems to be most noticeable 20-50mph. More so when tyres have warmed up.

It's irregular vibration which is more prevalent if I run on lower pressures and less prevalent on higher pressures i.e. 3lbs above or below recommended.

Could be flat spot(s) or internal tyre damage 20 inch wheels Pirelli Scorpion Green (Verde) 255x55.

The Auto 34 would be a bonus for 'match mounting' after balancing.

Any guidance to location of dealer, indie or tyre specialist appreciated.

Update

L405 booked in this week with BMTR (Birmingham Motor Tyres Ltd) who have an array of Hunter equipment.

Standard balancing works to a certain level of acceptability.

However, the Hunter systems go several stages further, by using a road force load balancer (replicates variable levels of pressure as if wheel in contact with road surface), check if tyre out of shape, check for distorted rim, etc. and can match mount the tyre if required.

My NSF was out and the OSF was close to ok, but also re-balanced. Both rears were checked and declared good. Rims ok in each case.

They can balance wheels to racing standard if required and regularly carry out work for Midlands based JLR Dealers and other manufacturers.

Those familiar with TSB LTB00030v2 (RR Sport 20 inch wheels 2007/Cool would benefit if any such problems occur.

Very professional business and did a great job. Thanks Chris and Bernie.

If you have any wheel issues call them on 0121-331-1122

Most proper Balancers can check for that my snap on boxer and Ragoli both do

It's part of a basic check to ensure that the shoe is in the most efficient place to stop potential shoe to rim contact

The Ragoli also has automatic demount system to ensure no lever damage to rim

Race balance zero zero is standard however any tyre shop that allows you near the kit is contravening so many regs they should be shut down

Ken, thanks for your response.

'Race balance zero zero is standard'. Not from the enquiries I made in this area I am afraid.

LR suggested this to my dealer as a possible solution to an unidentified shudder problem.

Pm me if you fancy having a go at my wheels for race balance (if you are not too far distant). Smile

Hi Ken,

Just read your post again,'however any tyre shop that allows you near the kit is contravening so many regs they should be shut down'

Where did this come from?

Demonstrations safely conducted via the Hunter and the pro-align websites and on You Tube. Are you looking to shut any of them down? Could be tricky.

Anyway, BMT have a customer viewing room so you can watch your work in progress while relaxing with a drink and in complete safety. Oh, and the drinks are non-alcoholic, so I don't think they will be facing any shutdown on that count either.

Responded just for clarity. Laughing

Tyre fitting is and can be rather dangerous does amaze me how some outfits get away with it balancing less so however the amount of counterbalancing I come across is staggering.

Viewing rooms are perfect but can you see the screens on the Balancers Rolling with laughter most rooms I've seen is know

Have read your views on the hunter kit with interest will investigate further however Thumbs Up

Well, you can see a reasonable part of the screen, but a full computer analysis print out per wheel is produced so you know what correction was required and how rectified. These you retain.

There has been some improvement to ride and I have reduced pressures to 31 (33) front and 34 (36) rear.

If towing or full passenger quota, I would increase pressures accordingly. 80% of time it's me and the dog. Canine variety of course. Wink
