Shot a spark plug

Has anyone ever had their RR spit out a spark plug?

Since replacing the engine in my big girl last May she has been a dream. However, driving on the M3 yesterday and got a rumble when I put my foot down a few minutes later she started to sound like a narrow boat.....garage has just told that cylinder No 1 has spat out its spark plug and it needs a helicoil or at worst a new head.

If anyone has had this happen to them I would love to hear what they did and if not, any thoughts would be gratefully received.

Had no quote as yet....

Ta Confused Owning a Range Rover is the land based version of a boat...a hole in the road in which to throw regular bundles of money!

Never even heard about this on other cars (not saying it can't happen). Could be that someone overtightened the spark plug and stripped the thread. MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!
Have the Faultmate MSV2 Extreme to be tinkering with the settings etc. !!

I had it happen in my MGF a few years ago, helicoil sorted it and it's still going fine today...I must just a be an unlucky car owner!! Owning a Range Rover is the land based version of a boat...a hole in the road in which to throw regular bundles of money!

i had that happen many years ago, on a triumph with an alloy head. in those days of budget bodges it was a case of sawing a couple of grooves into the thread of another spark plug, and carefully using it to tap a thread as the last two or so coils in the head had stripped, but they were what you need to guide the plug in, having nothing to lose, and plenty of gease to stop swarf dropping in, it went in fine. changed for another and presto. they can unscrew over a long period if not properly tightened, and that's easy to misjudge, with a UJ extension. I believe you can buy a 14mm tap to rethread the holes of popular plugs. they are nice and long, so you get them in at correct angle.
best to try this before removing head!

Got to be worth £20 wouldn't you think...Better than helicoil? Owning a Range Rover is the land based version of a boat...a hole in the road in which to throw regular bundles of money!

Usually caused when the plug has not been torqued up to the correct tightness and it starts to work loose and eventually spits it out. Alloy heads are very easy to damage when changing plugs and I always torque to the recommended setting

I have had one in the past on another car, can't remember what, where the plug had been over torqued and had basically stripped the threads and a new plug wouldnt torque in properly.

Sold the car. Which seemed to fix the problem..... For me anyway Rolling Eyes There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

England 2011 Range Rover Autobiography 5.0 SC V8 Santorini Black

On a previous car (FF) I had a plug detach itself from the head - had a slight misfire then engine warning light came on and off etc.

Diagnostics showed missing readings from cylinder 3 ..... opened it up and all looked ok until I took the coil out and had a look at the plug.

The coil and plug came out as one piece having fused together - threads had stripped in the head and the plug had shot out. Fixed it with a thread insert done in situ without taking the head off - scary to do but worked.

Here's what the coil and plug looked like after.....
