Check the prop shaft UJ's too. Get a good lever in there and give them a rattle.
The on off slack to me suggests UJs or mounts for the suspension frames.
If it is the Diff you can check this by chocking the wheels, Undo prop, jack front wheels clear of the ground. Make sure the car is safely chocked up. Get someone to roate one front wheel such that the diff input pinion roates. Listen carefully... if it is the bearing it should be fully apparent. If it is slight you can amplify the sound by holding a wooden pole against the diff case and the other next to your skull.. you will clearly pick up any uneaveness from the bearing then. If it is cyclic as in making the same odd noise on each roation of the input pinion then you can pretty much bet a pound to a pinch of that it is the input bearing. These are replacable by specialists but there is a collapseable spacer inside which requires smoke and mirrors to replce. (I did my own on a 101).
What sort of milage have you got?
This is just bad luck if it is the bearing, its actually not the same problem as the Diff / prop issue on the earlier models, which was the prop its self getting chewed up.
Interesting if it is the UJ's as I suspected it would only be a matter of time before they began to fail.. they are often replaced on older Landy models. 2010 Disco XS TDV6, 2009 Freelander 2 GS
