Damn... Just found a wasps nest the size of a football in an inaccessible part of my eaves.
They have been getting under the tiles and into the attic. I've bought a nest destroying foam but I can't get within 3 meters.
I'm thinking of waiting until tomorrow night and then removing a tile, drilling a hole and filling the nest as I can locate it from outside. Is this a bad idea?
Also.. I have just read online that wasps die off around late autumn. Should I leave it until then? Actually, maybe I should.. Previously..

Just had two removed. Down here a bit more than 25 but def get someone in to do it properly if they are active at this time of year and not in easy reach. If left they can get very aggressive as food (normally fruit) runs out late Summer. We always have one or two nests a year as we have loads of fruit trees. 'orrible things.

It's the access John... It's impossible to get to from inside, we can only see one part of it through a small access that runs past a dormer window.

Had two in my house in London. They make a new one each year so I just waited till winter and removed it. It was long dead by then.

I hear you can get a slow release poison which stops them starting another one.

Just read about a rentokil wasp dust that you dust all over wherever you see them enter the building. They drag it in themselves and destroy themselves within a day... £2.99 in homebase and 4.9 out of 5 in the reviews. I'll be up there tomorrow morning for it but will wait until night time to use it. Their activity stopped around 7.30 tonight.

+1 for the dust, had a nest inside a vent on the ground floor in the old house, had the summer from hell ( even getting inside) trying everything without success, including putting a mesh over it but the f***ers chewed through it. The dust worked in 3 days and meant we could enjoy the end of summer outside. Still got some in the garage just in case... '08 Audi S6 Avant 5.2 V10 with Milltek non-resonated. Vrrrrrrmmmmmph

Apparently a hoover tube placed very near the entrance and left on for 24 hours will do the trick.

Hey Contra. Use non-intrusive means like the dust/powder stuff, no worries at all.

But for the love of everything holy DO NOT actually mess with the nest unless you:
A. Have the "survival suit"
B. Have a means of escape
C. Have the professional nest destroyer
D. Have a means of containing the whole nest, i.e. you can cut it loose easily and bag it up

I had a massive one in a loft with dormers etc and very restricted access. Trust me, you don't want to be any place near the b*stards once you've pi55sed them off, certainly when there's hundreds/thousands of the fekkers.

Fella, one wasp sting hurts like hell. 10 of them will ruin your week, 100 will hospitalise you if it doesn't kill you and they can fly a lot faster than you can run. Either get the professionals in or use something non-intrusive at night when they're not active.

I speak from experience as you might have gathered.

I had exactly the same thing a couple years back, they got under the slate and nested in the roof eaves. It was a pain to get near them and I couldn't be bothered getting someone in and as it was late August I left them, they die off end of Aug early sept and wasps don't re use the same nests so they don't come back to an old nest.

Up to you, if it is a problem and they are causing an immediate issue call someone in, if not they will be dead soon anyway - simple  09 TDV8 Westminster, Mariana Black, Rear seat entertainment, hatch bag and 2 slobbery mutts

They go to bed early, so dusk is definitely the time to do it.

I had an easy access one, so I waited until evening, wore lots of heavy clothes and taped ALL cuffs, wore a "bug jacket" with the mesh face and hood and heavy work gloves, then just took a large garbage bag, folded it up over the nest, then quickly pinched it off and tied up the bag. I think I saw about three wasps. The prep took ages, the removal only a few minutes.

I wouldn't just leave them as they'll be back next year and don't move very far. I found mine the summer after buying the house. There were LOTS of abandoned nests around the garden from previous years. Once removed they lament been an issue (TOUCH WOOD). Considering the access issue, I'd try the dust. I've not heard of it, but it's easy, and low risk to you. If that doesn't work, try a professional.

Well, it would appear that the dust has worked !!
24 hours later and activity seems to have stopped. I'll monitor it over the next few days but for £2.99 it looks like it has cured a major headache.  Previously..
