Towing MPG

Hi All, I must admit my usual practice regarding fuel is if it needs some put some in,lol. However last week we had a trip to somerset towing the dreaded twin wheel caravan loaded its about 2000kg. I must say the fullfat towed better than I could have ever imagined, I thought the old p38 was a good tow car the L322 is just effortless. On the way home I decided to give the mpg a check as I knew I would need to stop.

Results were 160 miles 66 litres online calculator says 11.2 mpg

By the way I am talking LPG here not petrol/diesel

I must say I love the car whatever the mpg but how do people rate this ?

Is it good or terrible I honestly don't know if its around right of badly wrong, any input welcome.

Thanks Mick

Not sure if ita any use but I get about 14.5mpg from a TD6 when towing trailer + 2 horses, around 2700kg, that's averaged over a 350 mile journey at a good average speed Whistle Thumbs Up

When I had my LPG converted SC I used to get between 10 - 12 MPG when towing the caravan depending on motorway versus A roads etc (actual calculated miles versus litres filled) so it looks like you are similar...... Stolen / Gone: 2006MY Supercharged LPG Autobiography - Zambezi Silver with Sand/Jet/Jet Oxford Leather.....

I managed 20mpg at one point in a 3,500 mile tour through UK, France and Germany towing a 23' van. Worst was 11mpg going up a long incline in France. Being honest with the FF being such a capable tow car I don't care about the MPG, I would rather sacrifice MPG than be stuck behind something slower. You are either at Le Mans or waiting for Le Mans

If it helps I just checked the dash computer of my 2010 5.0 S/C. Was towing at the weekend down in the Cotswolds. Twin-axle van with all the clobber. 16.8 mpg since last fill up which was just as we left so it's fairly accurate. 182 miles of which about 20 were not towing. Petrol, not LPG.

I used to get about 12 with the 4.4 petrol towing 2200kg, now get about 18 towing 2400kg with the 4.4 tdv8.

I saw over 30 on the M5 at 55mph until I hit a slight gradient. I think I averaged around 25 for the whole journey.

3.6TDV8 with twin axle Brian James with 300Tdi 110 Defender with two sofas and chest of drawers. Surrey to West Wales about 250 miles averaging about 55mph and I think it was about the 26mpg mark according to the on-board.

The real way to calculate actual/real MPG, is not to use the onboard comp, but to reset miles after a brim fill, drive, and re-brim fill it. also, With lpg the computer will (onboard) show a false reading, as its a bit more actual fuel running into engine, than the onboard (petrol equivalent) says its metering. ( Ie petrol is denser, ) Again brim the tank, and reset the mileometer, then re-brim. Then use calculator. Miles/litres or gallon equiv. This will not be 100% as the lpg tank might not fill to brim at different temperatures, and I have noticed some lpg pumps don't 'fill to full' like others, as the pressure cuts off at different pressures, therefore you really need to fill at same pump.. (Not really practical,) -all this means that some MPG boasts on this forum are a bit, err, ahem, -WRONG!
I just sometimes calculate the cost per mile, in pence. Before all this 'January sales' fuel prices, it was about 23p per mile, all speeds average over a period. This is real costs etc.
you can then throw into the argument, the yearly service type costs, and the sliding resale value, and how many years you may have left to enjoy the fruits of your successful lifestyle, before the doctor asks you for your licence, Shocked and then think,

Who cares! It's a lovely motor! Very Happy
