I'm taking the week to travel Washington and Oregon with my father in the FFRR.

Both yesterday and today, I've got a worrying fault:

Upon starting the car, a get the dreaded 'Bong' along the a multitude of lights on the instrument panel and worrying messages such as TRANSMISSION FAULT - STOP SAFELY, HDC INACTIVE, and something about the suspension and the car not rising from access height.

Each time, I've shut the car off, then immediately restarted and everything is well. This seems to happen only within a few moments of starting and the car has been driven VERY recently.

Other than this, the car is running beautifully.

(2008 Jaguar AJV8 non-supercharged, petrol)

As we are FAR from any mechanical help, any pointers would be appreciated.

battery? will be the first thing to check. Happened to me with the Disco3 and the Fattie that when the battery is on its way out it gives all kinds of messages.

someone (can't recall who) also told me that best would be to switch everything, including auto headlights, off and wait until all checks have been completed before starting the car

New battery, make sure you fit the correct one

Changing: leave car off, unlocked with bonnet up for more than two minutes and I'm good to change it out? After, changing, lock-to-lock on steering and I'm good to go, right? Did I miss anything?

I've replaced both the battery and alternator as a consequence. Neither has made any difference. How did your investigation of the brake light switch go?
On the basis one would expect it to be a simple switch what am I missing here?

The reason the brake switch causes so many issues are that the brakes are where the ABS sensors are... which affect height, transmission, ABS and a whole host of other electrical signals. 2011 Stornaway Grey 5.0SC Autobiography

I hadn't abandoned the thread, just waiting until I had a solution to update the forum.

Okay, I think I've got it:

I had the car into an experienced indie LR mechanic. They found the alternator was only putting out 12V at full load, where it should have been 15V. They also said that the battery was original, on a car that's now six year old with more than 110,000 miles on it. While the battery DID pass their tests, it only just squeaked through. So, at his advice, I now have a new battery and they had the alternator rebuilt. The problem hasn't reoccurred, but it's an intermittent problem and I've had the FFRR back for only two days. I have noticed that the car starts much more promptly than before.

Another reason for going for the new battery was my Disco 1. I left a poor battery in there too long and it taxed the alternator so much that it had to be rebuilt too.

So, I'm hoping that it's all sorted now. Dijit, I don't know what to suggest. Good luck. Considering the bill for this work, it better well sort the problem!

Despite the new battery and alternator a few days ago I'm no further forward.
Car is not drivable unless the revs are above 1500 and less than 3000 as it triggers the following faults. The faults on the screen come up as engine fault, hdc fault, transmission fault and sometimes air suspension. Bizarre. The triggering at low revs one might assume was battery/alternator but battery level and alternator output are both spot on. The triggering above 3000 rpm suggests its not a lack of juice.
The IDS offers lost communication with instrument cluster control module and remote driver utility module as 100% relevance as well as a whole host of others.

What is the driver utility module? Any thoughts on the instrument cluster control module?

Incidentally the only two lights which come on are HDC and emergency brake assist.

This must be my 8th or 9th LR and its the first one to take the car off the road. The limp home mode is deadly. Won't go up hills and not enough power to pull out of junctions.

Anyone else experienced these? It's a late 2007 TDV8 Rehab is for quitters!!!

Wow, that sounds very frustrating.

This may help:

My mechanic also said that these problems could also be caused by corrosion in the battery terminal contacts. I.e. the power isn't ALWAYS getting through. Possibly checking that all the electrical contacts to battery and alternator are good. If a lot of errors cluster around a particular module, possibly checking the contacts to that module may help. (Sorry, but I have NO idea HOW to do what I just suggested. Wiser heads are welcome to bud in at this point... )

This may be totally irrelevant as we're talking prehistoric next to the FFRR, but my Disco ('97 D1 V8 auto) had low rev problems that were finally cased to a faulty fuel pump (the one in the petrol tank) and some expensive bits that control the fuel injectors. No idea if these are even present on a diesel FFRR but the work changed the car from a sluggish two cylinder vehicle into one with a rather nice V8.

Have all the fault codes been properly cleared after the work?

Yup the fault codes all cleared. Battery terminals are fine.

Having spent hours trawling there are a number of suggestions. One in particular is misaligned steering. Am I right to reject that as with the vehicle stationary in park the faults kick in seconds after starting up?
The theory as I understand it is the steering column sensor is slightly misaligned indicating to the ecu's that the vehicle is going through a bend. The wheel sensors do not sent corresponding signals whereby one would be going faster than the other wheel thereby confusing the ecu's and triggering damn near everything in sight.
I'm equally struggling to see how the brake switch could trigger automotive hell. The brake lights come and off with the pedal. I've tried starting it with the footbrake both on and off.

Do the two lights hdc and emergency brake assist point to anything or are they just victims of this crazy gremlin attack. Rehab is for quitters!!!
