Scotland 2014 Range Rover Vogue SDV6 Santorini Black

I'm not 'arguing' as such allyc... I couldn't see me ever taking a personal lease, nor HP, nor would I be inspired to pay £700, £800, £900, £1000 upwards per month for any car. I'm just curious about how peoples minds work around debates like this and I'm open to being enlightened.

In the two examples I've quoted, I've actually already outlined the cost, so you can work out the estimated difference in cost over a 4 year lease and a 5 year loan in whatever guise the 'loan' is.

However, in the two examples referred to, the difference per month between lease and loan is £92/month more for the 'loan', equating to paying £5820 more than lease, if going down the loan route over 5 years. That still leaves you with the vehicle and a sizeable chunk of 'equity' in that vehicle if completing the loan repayment, as opposed to no vehicle and no equity and after 4 years of the lease route... I think?

Thumbs Up

Vogue Finance Example

Just got finance example via uninvited mail shot for a £73k 3.0 diesel.

£18k deposit, 4 years at £750/mth and then a final payment of £33k or give it back.

This might be worth considering... My mum has a pcp/hire/whatever on a 2nd hand car. It's a Honda crv and I think it was about 3 or 4 when she got it. The car was like new and the payments are much smaller compared to a new car. Her servicing costs and tyres and road tax are all included. There is every chance a similar deal could be available by someone on a low mileage fattie? Previously..

It's fair enough that people can acquire cars in this way if they want to and the initial payment, monthly payments and final option payment are all relative to the car of course.

However, an initial outlay touching £20k, 4 years at £750/mth (not ridiculous in itself) and then the prospect of needing to meet a final payment of £33k or give it back... wouldn't tempt me though I'm sure it appeals to people otherwise they wouldn't be doing packages like that!

Thumbs Up

But you are looking at a motor costing £ 73k.

To lease the same car £5k deposit then £1k a month for 4 years total cost £53k.

Assume a 4 year old 48k mile RR worth £35k retail £30k trade.

Basically it allows someone who cannot afford to spend £73k on a new car to drive around in one - That's what helps LandRover keep sales figures up as aspirational vehicles that people want to be seen in

We recently leased a CLS Shooting brake for a director on a 6 +23 contract hire for £301 per month including vat for a £45k car from Mercedes Benz Finance £8,700 for a car for 2 years on 12k miles per annum incl maintenance - Its butt ugly by the driver loves it

Just my thoughts Paul

So what sort of deposit would the person have had to put down on the CLS SB on the 2 year lease pj as that does seem like a seductive offer!

I thinks the important word here is "affordability". Can you afford to buy it outright? If yes, you're very lucky, so fill your boots. Can you afford to pay it from however you generate your income? If yes, why not? The only issue, as I see it, is if you overload yourself and can't pay. That's where there's a problem.

For sure Alan, if everyone waited until they had the cash in the bank to buy everything outright, maybe so called 'big ticket' items would, in the main, sit gathering dust.

Perhaps it's a combination of what people can afford (either outright or over a period of time); and equally as importantly maybe, what people are comfortable with!

No right or wrong answer then really.

Indeed. That example is ridiculous to me too. My concept of a lease deal, is perhaps 3 or 6 payments up front, followed by relatively small monthly payments, say £400-£500, over 3 years and a GFMV, so at that point you can hand it back, or pay the outstanding balance by whatever means at your disposal. Got - 2017 SDV8 Autobiography in Loire Blue

so out of interest, what do you reckon my 2010 model Vogue SE with 49K miles and only one previous owner is currently worth ?

I bought it in Dec 2013

Will be interesting to see wether currently I'd have been better off leasing a BMW 730 etc
