First of all hello FFRR community! Im looking into getting my 1st RR and figured a good 1st step would be to join this forum..

This may turn out to be a controversial thread, and its certainly not my intention to start a virtual bar brawl, but......

What is best. 3.6TDV8 or 4.2S/C with LPG??

What are the pros/cons of each?

Supercharged all the way !! Preferably 5.0 or at least post 06. Forget the coal burners  Tony

Ok, start with what are you using it for, and how many miles are you going to do. Then it's a lot easier to work out the relative costs of diesel and an LPG conversion.

I'm of the opinion that if you have to ask which is better, you preclude yourself from the SC

Does doing an LPG conversion not lessen performance?

It's simple, really :
Annual mileage
Purchase budget
Committment to maintenance

. . . or get an NA 4.4 Jag V8 car

 Where do you go after one of these . . . ?

For me the diesel, no question.
- better off road due to insane grunt at 500 rpm
- better fuel mileage - I drive a min of 100km's / day.
- diesel costs 20% less in France an Germany where I do most of my driving
- range. I go ~850+kms on one tank (we do several long trips / year)
- seat of the pants, a chipped TDV8 is not even that far off an SC

All very subjective. But I wanted to move the discussion from theoretical to real for n4s' benefit.

Can't beat a petrol V8 sound, but for practical FFRR motoring it has to be a diesel.

Made me realise am stuck in TD6 mode, does a TDV8 sound like a V8 or like a diesel ? .
Experience is the only genuine knowledge, but as time passes, I have forgotten more than I can remember

The consensus ive had so far from most people (apart from on here on FFRR) is that for enjoyment its S/C but for everyday real world its TDV8. But if we think about it, is that really the case?

Look at it this way, and im just thinking aloud here. TDV8 = approx 25MPG @ £1.35 per litre. Compared to S/C LPG = approx 15-20MPG @ £0.70 per litre.

Also the S/C is FAR cheaper to initially purchase.

On the face of it the S/C just nicks it for day to day running.

Or am i missing something glaring? Quite possibly

1st of all, decent cars dont do diesel, diesels stink, diesel is for trucks,
2nd if costs of fuel is a problem do not buy a FFRR. The cost of depreciation and maintanance are a lot higher as the difference in fuel costs between diesel or petrol will ever be.
LPG goes very well and is a lot cleaner. I do not feel the difference driving on lpg or petrol. Driving on higher altitudes I switch to petrol because I think she sounds smoother on petrol.

In addition, Petrol is the fuel of the Gods. Diesel is for trucks and tractors.
