My carbon footprint is bigger than yours Ner Ner

So, real world brim to brim checking. 16 towing the caravan, 19 round town and 26 on a run to see relatives, Motorway 190 miles, 75 ish all the way.

My old TDV8 used to add about 30% to those numbers but that was overshadowed by having to replace 2 seized injectors (2.5k) and an EGR valve at 600 quid. 3 grand buys a lot of fuel.

United Kingdom 2007 Range Rover Supercharged 4.2 SC V8 Zermatt Silver

I've been driving my SC into Hammersmith each week day for the past few months. It's a 75 mile round trip.

I keep up with the traffic in the overtaking lane, so around 80-ish when permissable and clearly down to far less stop-start away from motorways.

My last tank saw the best yet at 21.6mpg. That's a calculated figure.

I rarely stab the throttle as there's few chances, but progress is brisk and the SC's torque helps enormously and has been especially useful low-down after the supercharger pulley was changed. Si. <This is my name.

I eat rat poison.

A man ain't truly been insulted until he stands buck naked in front of a woman and she didn't even notice. Or care.

26mpg from a 2500kg 500bhp car with the aerodynamic properties of a cathedral! Shocked

My TD6 driven gently doesn't do much better, and as you say a dodgy injector/EGR/pre-heater/fuel pump/you name it quickly eats away any mpg gains, esp as in Switzerland petrol is about 5% cheaper.

That's it, when my ancient TD6 dies I'm going for a 5.0 supercharged.

Maybe. Smile

My attempts at driving Miss Daisy saw 28 mpg. But a steady 56 mph in lane 1 with all the smelly trucks is no fun Thumbs Up

I should add though I rarely break speed limits. Doing over 1000 miles a week on the work commute means I need my licence so I can well do without speeding tickets.

The old adage "to make the power you have to use the fuel " rings true here , its why N/A petrols are only fractionally more economical than S/C cars you are rarely using or rather making that last 100hp .
I know its not that simple when you look at the details and an S/C probably uses something like 70-80hp to drive the compressor at flat chat . 2008 MY Supercharged

Yes, but at part throttle and cruising revs it'll be nothing like that, and with longer gearing and intercooling as you say it can be more efficient than an NA.

I wonder where JLR will take this engine in the future. If they power the supercharger with an electric motor they could make it linear with power requirements rather than with revs. They then just need a recovery turbine in the exhaust and it will be a pretty efficient engine - actually that would be an implementation of the Atkinson cycle.

Enjoyed reading the above. Glad to see I am not the only one who follows economy like as if it even matters in this vehicle.
But I have done a little non scientific test of my own. German autobahn speeds (90mph - 110mph), plenty of welly on the a roads, some natty overtaking with every last turbo charger spinning it's heart out - AND, 27.5mpg consistently.
Trip to UK, slower speeds, 'economy' (yuk) type driving, and .... 29.8mpg.
So my conclusion, enjoy the drive, use the 313 horses cos for the sake of 2 odd mpg, it's hardly worth it. Laughing

Tomorrow I am doing a 500km round trip to Netherlands. Just me. Do I take the 1,8l petrol Audi tt or the RR? Well after a little calculation, the TT will only save me £3 in fuel vs RR over the whole journey as diesel is so much cheaper here.
The case for FFRR ownership (as long as its a diesel in France) remains pretty compelling Smile)))) (although a SC makes an even nicer noise, yes) Current: 2017 RR Supercharged. 5.0 V8.

Scotland 2014 Range Rover Vogue SDV6 Santorini Black

On first getting the 4.2, I drove 5 hours home from the garage, like Miss Daisy, partly trying to keep it clean and partly trying to convince myself that I could pass it off as economical! Laughing

It showed 28.5 mpg.

I don't really check the fuel consumption now (too busy listening out for brake squeal!) Wink

However, it regularly does the 450 mile return Scotland England trip, comfortably on one tank of super unleaded (averaging between 70/80 mph).

And that's not bad at all for such a big vehicle?

Thumbs Up

Am I more mental than I thought or are you saying " (averaging between 70/80 mpg). , Rolling with laughter Rolling with laughter Rolling with laughter

Or am I just missing something ??

I must admit I have been doing some experimenting with super unleaded and getting more to the gallon the normal unleaded , as you guys know most of what I do is silly little journeys and the last run it had was to Norhtamton to meet Adam and Pick up these fantastic style 11's

Well I average 13.5 to the gallon on normal unleaded and 15.5 on super unleaded , I dont get it but I am sure someone on here knows why !

Cheers

Hey I just a mental case trying to get by and saw that and thought , am I more mental than I thought , especially since they put me on new meds that make me hyper ( really not nice BTW )

But yep , made me read it , about 20 times to see if I was reading it write Rolling with laughter Rolling with laughter Rolling with laughter :roll laugh:

Its funny that I got talking to a guy at the garage last night filling up my thirsty SC and he told me his nearly new BMW 6 series can do up to 40 mpg and I said are you winding me up and he said nope , then went on to say there are 4 driving modes and this is where I got a bit lost but he did say in sport it would probably do 12 mpg, who knows but what an awesome looking car and the thing that threw me was it was a 4 door where they are normally 2 , but it was so damn nice , sorry for sort of going off topic

Cheers

Think my long term average is 30.5 mpg in mixed use in the SDv8. Seen as high as 46mpg average on longer runs though. Kind of puts my alfa to shame as it struggles to reach 25mpg even on a run! '14.5 SDV8 Nara Bronze for sale
