Could you supply a price for a replacement upper tailgate - mine is bubbling across the top and all along the bottom seam, bodyshop reckons it's not repairable.

I suspect I'm going to be shocked by the price (and not in a good way!) but thought I would ask before going down the 2nd hand route


As an observation, I know the tailgate is a known problem, but it really is shocking for a premium vehicle (and my arches need sorting)

When I sold my Fiat Coupe it was 12 years old. It was made entirely out of recycled Italian washing machine steel and finished by some trains monkeys, however it only had one tiny patch of bubbling rust over one of the rear lights

The really galling thing is that this has been a problem for 44 years and the tailgates STILL rust badly.

Why not approach LRUK customer service and ask if they might be prepared to offer some contribution as a goodwill gesture even although the 6 year anti-corrosion warranty has expired on your car?

This is VERY well documented issue, so they might be sympathetic.

Thanks Dan, that is better than I was expecting, although its still going to cost > £1,000 to sort properly with spraying and swapping the glass and electrics over

I will get back to you re. purchasing one, it wont be for a couple of weeks as got to sort a date with the bodyshop when I dont need my car (and I'm begininng to question spending more money on a car which is worth approx. £13k....)

How bad is it on a 2007 car? Surely a good bodyshop can cut any metal which is done out weld in a new bit, coat the full tailgate with a rust treatment and fill and profile leaving it looking as good as new and rust free? Now: BMW 640d M Sport, Alpine White
