Yeah, we've camped at Mt Hart too, when I took the RRS up there three years ago. Nice place, particularly that old homestead. Cracker of an outdoor bar. Just have to get through about 20 creek crossings to get there.

Yep. And added to the butchery of a head rebuild that the supplying garage had done to it before it was sold to me would have meant had it not ran out of fuel, I think the head would have blown completely 'somewhere' and it'd still be there now.

Crossing the Pentecost River at El Questro Station prior to things going pear-shaped on the Mitchell Falls Rd.

I wonder what sort of temperatures would be involved (must be quite hot for seals to fail) and whether there is a way of making a small self contained liquid cooling unit (non powered preferably).

There are some systems available, and external reservoir shocks are supposed to run cooler.

That video I posted last night should give you an idea of the shock and its positioning/dimensions, don't have any stills. I would think some kind of heat sink wrapped around it might be a start to help keep it cooler. 2012 L322 TDV8 Luxury

It sure was hot. The oil was literally smoking as it dribbled out. 2012 L322 TDV8 Luxury 2013 VW Polo GTI Gone: 2010 RRS 3.0 TDV6, 2007 Audi TT 3.2V6 Roadster |

That is in quite a good position to fit a fin type heat sink for sure. Also a liquid cooling type should work quite well on this. It would be interesting to know if just cooling the reservoir would help or whether cooling the shock itself (with the valve arrangement) is the critical part here.

With hindsight, how is this avoided? Obviously, you can't drive faster than death speed as you break tyres and other bits. 15km/h is rather slow. Would you be safe with the cruise at 15 all day? Could you drive normally for, say, 30 minutes, then stop for 5 to cool down, and repeat? Would chucking some water on them help? The temperatures and distances involved are just so far out of what people normally expect. |

Heath Robinson - water mist spray, like the ones for intercoolers or brakes. |

Quote: 'Getting good contact between the heat sink and the tube (in this case) is a bit more difficult. There are supposed to be compounds that can do that, can't remember what but in the electronics business this is a common issue so maybe start looking there. '

Wouldn't a simpler solution be an overheating alarm for the suspension, that alerts the driver on the dashboard display? It would hardly be a technical stretch, given the amount of tech and computer wizardry LR have packed into these cars already. 2012 L322 TDV8 Luxury
