RR 4.4 TDV8 2011 Exhaust System, Normal: 2 or 4 tail pipes ?

Hi All,

I am looking to buy a 4.4 and have seen one, but observed that the exhaust is different to the other TDV8 4.4's that I have seen.

The exhaust is all located underneath the car. With the exception of this car all the others have 2 x exhaust coming out of the back box on either side i.e. total 4. On this car there is only 1 x exhaust on each side.

The car has done <20,000 miles and is on an November 11 plate. Was this standard or has this had another separate exhaust system replaced. If it has been replaced, then this would seem odd for a 2 1/2+ year car with less than 20,000 miles ?

Any ideas if it is standard for that year / model or what could have happened ?

Many thanks

Thanks for the photo mmiata, the one I'm looking at is a little later November 2011 rather than September
but I would not have thought it was changed.

Yours is superb condition underneath !!, the one i'm look at is not so good. It was originally owned by Land Rover and I suspect a Demo model as it has the all-round cameras. I guess there is a possibility that the Exhaust was changed.

Has anybody seen a TDV8 4.4 with just a single exhaust on each side of the back box ? Could there be any issues with power being limited by exhaust flow ?

Thx Bob

I`m quite sure LR did not change on exhaust design during those few months! Smile Moreover on mine the date of manufacturing is October (instead of Sept, as now I have checked) so registration might been in November as well.
The one you are looking on the pic also having surround cams but this have nothing to do with exhaust or demo vehicle...
I would be cautious with a vehicle which required exhaust change under 20k. Although at a good price...
Then you should have a good look around what else might had been changed or damaged. 4.4 TDV8 Vogue Buckingham Blue MY12

HI mmiata, Pfazz,

I cant get a photo at the moment until the delivery post sale completes. Essentially it has one tail pipe on either side of the back box rather than 2 on each side.

Sounds like the exhaust has been changed with the earlier owner/s. The first owner was Land Rover, it's listed as Land Rover Internal Fleet in Bicester UK. I just wonder now if it was damaged as a test vehicle.

Thx Bob

Hi All,

Is it possible for a few more people whom have MY11 and MY12 4.4 TDV8's to check if they have 2 or 4 downpipes from the Exhaust backbox. There are some different views, so I'd like to get real world sample checks of cars.

thx

Why don't you pay a dealers forecourt a visit and have a look at a selection of vehicles.
That's got to be worth the effort.

Just a word of warning, LR ex management vehicles / ex LR Experience - check, check and double check for underside damage - exhaust, floor pan, chassis/sub frames spoiler and trim - many are damaged due to OffRoad use. 2021 L405 Vogue SE 4.4 V8 DIESEL ~ #17

I have now found out the situation.

A 4.4 TDV8 of 2011 / 2012 should have 4 x tailpipes (2 either side of the backbox).

However some cars that have been within the Land Rover Fleet and used in the Land rover Experience had experienced problems with water going back up the tail pipe and damaging the DPF. As a result Land Rover had some vehicles modified to have a non standard exhaust fitted with 2 x tail pipes. These were intended to reduce any flow of water (whilst submerged) back in to the Exhaust / DPF.

In this case, the non standard exhaust was not returned to standard exhaust when it left the Land Rover Fleet.

This is the case with the car that I have been looking at, but may not be the cause for any other RR 4.4. TDV8's out there.

The good news is that LR were very helpful in sharing the pieces of the information for my research. I was also separately advised to have a a full inspection performed given it's LR Experience fleet history.
