As above, fellas - looking at buying a Mk6 Golf, probably a 2.0 Tdi for Mrs Tug's daily wheels.
Anyone out there running one, or has run one ?

Golfs great Hack's get a DSG box

We've got a mk6 gti.
Very nice to drive and has decent power.
Average mpg is about 30.
Had it 3 years

How is the ride quality Brian ?
Probably looking at a Match - 16" wheels - but might consider a GT Tdi (not Gtd) on 17" wheels.
I'm a big fan of ride quality (hence the FF !) . . .

Doors on the 3 door MK6 are very heavy, they are long and can suffer with alignment drop/ wind intrusion because of that.

I see you expressed a preference for a diesel. Anyhow:
The timing chain tensioner on certain petrol MK6 TSi engines can be an Achilles heal and if it fails could lead to an engine repair bill running into thousands. If the tensioner and associated parts have not been replaced, an independent specialist can do the work with the modified components for circa £350 and it is preventative money well spent, notwithstanding the peace of mind that comes with that.

The ride quality on a GTi with 18" low profile tyres or bigger - IMHO - would probably better suit the younger and/ or the 'enthusiast' because combined with the sports suspension, whilst not an uncomfortable ride by any means, the car grips and certainly connects you with the road, at times feels like a go kart, brilliant though the Mk6 GTi is to drive.

1/ Interesting ref the doors - I had an old Range Rover that did that
2/ May consider a 1.2Tsi (cambelt I believe) - I understand the 1.4's are the problematic ones. That's a real shame though as my father in law has a 1.4 Tsi DSG. It's a great car. Realistically I think the 2.0 Tdi is the one for us. Apparently the gear ratios on the 1.6 Tdi are terrible. No good for us as it's pretty hilly round here . . .
3/ Agreed on the tyres - 17's are as big as I'm prepared to go - we've a fair share on uneven roads -

Our golf has the standard 18" monza shadows and the ride is good, our car has the optional acc suspension and you can choose comfort or sport. We have a 5 door model and is handy for getting the kids in and out.

Brian, the 18" Monza shadow alloys as pictured on your car were an optional extra at approx £400... And such smart, head turning wheels, a bargain at that!

Thanks guys we've had the golf for 3 years now and I really don't see a reason to sell it...
The mk7 Gti/gtd does not look anywhere as good as a mk6 and the residual value of the mk6 will not drop that much more when you see the price of mk5's. As for the alloys £400 is a bargain ! Our wheels will need refurbished due to the white worm

The mk6 r is a lot of money compared to the Gti, you can get the Gti remapped to about 270bhp
The mk7 r is not bad looking but spending over £30000 is not for me

Nice looking MK6 R in that ad Alanm... The newer MK7 R is weighing in at approx £38k and many golf enthusiasts aspire to have one. To me that's ridiculous and an unnecessary amount to spend on a golf, no matter how good it is, although each to their own.

Many MK6 enthusiasts actually profess to prefer the look of the MK6 over the subtly - some say more reserved looking - MK7. Put a MK6 and MK7 GTi or equivalent side by side and they both look fantastic cars!
