After been away from a l322 for a while I'm thinking of buying a good towcar and sell my van.
I'm not 100% convinced I want a tdv8 due to turbo issues and the mpg from a 5.0 puts me off a bit too. What towcar or 4x4 would you buy for upto 25k (5.0 would be more)

What turbo issues are putting you off a TDV8 ?

Not heard of that many, there are also issues with S/C when they become long in the tooth.

Speaking from personal experience over a 120k miles total in various TDV8's -all done without any engine issues - all serviced by main agents fwiw

I had a conversation with my local dealer's service manager on Thursday - his informed opinion was there was little to chose in reliability and problems between the engines - unless they hadn't been serviced properly

Tbh i think the turbo issues in the tdv8 are fairly rare in well serviced cars, and were more common in the sport. Plenty of people run them into high milage without problems. Obviously there will be exceptions to the rule....

Get the gearbox fluid, diffs, transfer box serviced make sure the alternator has been changed, and all should be reasonably good mechanically.

Tdv8 makes a fantastic towcar! Thoroughly recommend  There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

If you don't want a FFRR or a TDV8 it's a discovery 4. There are a lot of XS model's on the market sub £25k and if you are not wanting to have the latest tech, it's only being used for towing and weekends....I'd get a late build D3 HSE with low mileage, have it remapped and book some holidays with the change....

I was soooo close to a D4 when I got he FFRR...glad I chose what I did, but they are very nice. Pop over to D3/D4 and see what the chaps over there say ?

Only 2 I can think of outside that I would look at for towing and weekends etc are Toyota LC or VW Tuareg. Is this where I put the car details and a bit about myself ?........

Went to see a d4 xs 2010 yesterday with 80000 miles. It was very nice but still not sure. It was 21000

Why not get a Disco 3 4.4 V8 if its not going to get used much the MPG difference isnt a biggy and more solid engines?

Failing that the TDV8 issues are more common in the SSRR compared to the FF. I personally just put this down to driving styles and the compressed engine compartment. The FF ones are pretty solid mostly just keep ontop of oil changes and maybe change the fluid annually and not at the mileage required as you wont reach normal service interval mileage as a weekend vehicle really. Servicing more than required has been proved on other cars to massively extend engine and turbo life and the easiest example to show of this is Renaults early DCi engines.
Quoted 20k mile for service intervals. Most would reach less than 100kmiles before the turbo bearing failed and then the engine pulled the oil up from the sump thru the turbo and revs to 5000+ RPM and blows itself to bits. Lots of youtube videos on this as well.

IMO save the money for the weekend car and get the D3 V8 option or the FF TDV8 for under £!5k instead. no point losing money on a weekend car is there really? Keep those extra pennies for normal repairs incase.. FFRR MY06 facelift With TDV8 Alloys Zeros/ATR's

If you like the L322, but don't want a TDV8 and the 5.0 SC is too much, what about 4.2 SC, or the 4.4 nonSC AJV8 models? Even the non-Supercharged one has a LOT of get up and go. I really like my 4.4 AJV8.
