Cameradvice sought

Right chaps, some advice please. We're going on holiday over Christmas and New Year to the Dominican republic and I want some decent photos this time.

Now as some will know I have a Nikon D300s which takes fantastic photos, it's just too big and cumbersome for holidays. So, what can I get in a compact size?

Ideally I want it to fit in a shirt pocket so no larger than a fag box. But I also want as close to SLR quality as I can get. My first consideration was a Hasselblad Stellar but if anyone knows different I could use some help please.

The Hasselblad. 24MP, Zeiss lens. Large sensor. Nice looking. Just rather expensive Laughing

I've not seen the Hasselblad before but typical price tag for one!
Much like Leica compacts it looks like another manufacturers in a different skin (Panasonic), in this case it looks like a Sony RX100...which is confirmed with a quick google.
I have a Sony RX100 (Mk1) as a pocketable compact to complement my D800E, a great compact with a larger physical sized sensor compared to others and a decent quality lens. The RX100 Mk3 will be out shortly with improvements across the board and will be better than the Hasselblad for half the price.

I gave up on compacts a few years ago when smartphone cameras improved. I agree that you and I might have different views on what is acceptable quality. Laughing

I'm properly glad I asked now. From what I can tell only Sony and Canon actually make their own cameras in the compact sector.
Nikon, Fuji and Vivitar would all appear to be made by LG, Panasonic seem to manufacture for the world and his wife.

That Sony is indeed exactly the same unit as the Hasselblad. The time was when the Hasselblad name was worth something, indeed I had one of their medium format film cameras. Now they're just badge engineering stuff. Rolling Eyes

I think I'll have to go to London this week and check out CameraWorld & Grays of Westminster. Seem the only place you can try these things now is London, just so few proper photographic shops left anymore sadly.

Thanks Chaps.

Maybe not quite small enough but I've got a Fuji X10 compact which I would recommend for sure. Picture quality is fantastic. Might be worth a look next time you're in the camera shop.

I know a couple of pro togs who both recommend Olympus if anyone asks for recommendation on sub DSLR cameras.
this one seems to be the current favourite http://shop.olympus.co.uk/e_commerce/pen-c...ign=penglb

Yep, i'd assume the Hasselblad compact was made by Fuji, just like every other "new" camera Hasselblad make.

I still have (and use) their medium format film cameras, but ever since the X-Pan, Fuji has made them, including the H series.

Not that there is anything wrong with Fuji kit, indeed i use an X-pro1 for digital work, just that in the old days, Hasselblad was a symbol of quality and flexibility instead of just another rebadging exercise. Big Cry

I shoot Nikon, have 300s and recently bought a D610 plus some FX full frame lenses. Great piece of kit but when we go on holiday I use the other halfs Panasonic Lumix TZ30.

These are some of the photos I've taken with the TZ30

Before having the Nikon 300s, I used to carry around a NikonD90. A lightweight (in comparison) DSLR and easy to carry around and achieved these shots

Do you need video too ?

I've got a Canon G15 - on the bulky side for a compact, coat pocket more than shirt pocket - but takes fantastic pics and also really great quality full HD video.

My main camera is a Canon 1D with L series lenses - a pro setup, but I find I use the G15 nearly all the time these days.

DP review is the website to look at for reviews Thumbs Up
