After all of the goings on last Friday when the P38 caught fire I ended up needing to drag my dad from Glasgow to Welwyn Garden City in the TDV8 today to pick me, the trailer and the Citroen up.

On the way home we were travelling on the A1(M) and all of a sudden the car started to make an almighty racket, luckily we were on the inside lane right beside the hard shoulder so we stopped almost immediately and found the rear left tyre on the Range Rover absolutely shredded.

This tyre still had 7mm of tread on it and had only covered around 8000 miles since the car left the factory.

Whilst trying to change the wheel, the wheel on the car was to hot to touch so we had to let it cool down a little before taking it off.

When spinning the wheel there appears to be a screw in the tread which is annoying but I'm not sure it explains the total failure of the sidewall.

As far as I know, a screw in a tyre would cause a gradual loss of pressure. This in turn would cause the tyre to run soft and could cause it to blow out I guess. However, should the tyre pressure monitoring on the car not have detected this and flagged an alarm?

Luckily we were only doing 30-40 mph when it failed so there was no damage done to the car and we were able to stop immediately upon hearing the noise. We can't of travelled more then 50 - 60 feet after the noise occurred yet the way the sidewall on the tyre has failed though is pretty spectacular. The entire outside wall is destroyed. There's nothing left of it.

I was just wondering if you guys reckoned it's worth talking to Land Rover about this as a possibly defective tyre or a failure of the TPMS on the car?

The fact the wheel was too ho to touch sounds very odd, don't see why a sudden tyre failure would cause this. To my mind, it seems more likely the calliper was sticking and this heated the wheel and tyre up to the point of catastrophic failure.

I would certainly talk to Land Rover as clearly a dangerous thing to happen.

Hope that's all your bad luck done with  2007 Zermatt Silver TDV8 Vogue SE - now sold but was a great car!

Dont know about TMPS as mine is disabled, their useless imo and checking tyres the old fashoned way is the only way.

I had a tyre shread its tread years ago in my trailer towing the comp landrover 90 in Ireland, the only thing I put it down to was going over a speed bump to quickly after meeting up with a mate at an industrial site (there speed bumps are small but vissious and only went over at 30mph)
The hole car didnt feel right when at 55/60 mph just before the shead....what a sights that was when it did go. I still have the tyre and its still holding 80psi , but no tread on it! If it dont work.......burn it!

If the IId tool cant fix it.......burn the FF.

If the FF cant be fixed......buy a Land Cruiser!

If the LC cant be fixed..............................................BUY a horse !!

As above, really hot would imply a stuck caliper.

I know the tyre was shredded, but is there enough intact to see if there is a flat spot?

My rear calipers stuck on, but not enough to lock the wheel. I guess if it were totally locked on it could cause enough weakness to lead to a catastrophic failure?

+1 on checking the caliper. Glad no one was hurt and no lasting damage done to car.

the tpms should have detected the loss of pressure..because it didnt you might not have the system activated or you might not even have the tpms system..

when tyres deflate, the temperature increases and gets to a point where the tyre disintegrates...this will cause the wheel to become very hot ..
i remember being called out to truck blowouts only to find that even after arriving at the scene an hour later the rim still being warm to the touch.. ... - .- -.

It definitely wasn't the caliper as after changing the wheel and keeping on going it was fine.

We rang the local dealer this morning who said to ring LR Customer Care. We rang them and were referred to Continental as the tyre manufacturer.

After speaking to them, it sounds like there's been a gradual loss of pressure due to the screw in the tyre and the loss of pressure has caused it to run hot until it blew out.

Having looked at the handbook and compared them, this car definitely does have TPMS so I'll be speaking to the dealer to find out why it didn't work and to find out what they intend to do about the tyre as this system should have saved damaging the tyre.

FWIW I had a screw in one of my rear tyres which caused it to slowly lose pressure - TPMS on my car flagged it 2007 Zermatt Silver TDV8 Vogue SE - now sold but was a great car!

Just an aside I put my summer tyres on in April and immediately the toms flagged a problem so yes I would have Landrover look at the system and pay for a replacement tyre

Well, it turns out that although our car has the TPMS valves fitted to it, the car doesn't actually have TPMS.

According to the dealer because it needs an additional module fitting to it, this system cannot be retrofitted to the vehicle after it has left the factory.

It's a shame Land Rover haven't made the trail air system work with the L322 yet. Apparently they are/were having problems with the rear view mirror being compatible for what they use it for.

Wow, seems the later the model of L322 the more stuff they seem to remove. I am surprised a 2012 AB spec car is not fitted with TPMS as standard. If you go back a few years the TPMS system was fitted as standard on the lower spec Vogues and Vogue SE's yet now its no longer fitted.

Tbh, we assumed our car had it as well as the 07 we had prior to this one had it.

Hey ho... £252 for a Continental tyre later and all is well again. At least it didn't separate the tread or do any damage to the car.
