Been away for 2 days down to Aylesbury for a training course through work, decided to take the Rangie for added comfort instead of the parents mk5 Golf GT TDI, picked my brother up from Gateshead, set off on a 260 mile drive, arrive in Aylesbury just outside the hotel after a faultless and rather refreshing and economical journey, (21.7mpg at a steady 80mph with the AC and cruise control on), all was well until i get a warning to say that the coolant level was low, pulled in to the car park, got out and was confronted with an alarming amount of water coming from under the car. !!

Went out for a few* beers with one of the guys who was running the course, told him I had no breakdown cover and needed the car fixed, he said the place next door to the training venue is a garage and they'd sort it.

This morning, topped the expansion bottle with about 4 liters and set off for the course, roughly 2 miles away. 9am the car was on the ramp being checked over, turns out that there was a split in one of the pipes going from the expansion bottle to the radiator, local LR garage which was 1 mile away didn't stock the hose, so they did a temporary repair by cutting out the split and piecing in a new section of pipe, refilled and bled the coolant and everything fine. Drove the return 260 miles without a problem, averaging 22mpg, again 80mph with the AC on.

All credit to the garage for fitting me in with no notice and sorting the problem on the spot, now I have to have my pants pulled down by LR fr a new hose as it looks like a big one on the parts catalogue printout the garage gave me!

Shame they fixed it really, Nick who owns the company doing the course was going to let me borrow his very tasty Merc CLS for a few days until mine was fixed them meet up with him half way at the weekend Never mind though! So another 520 mile road trip and as ever, and I'm in awe fo how amazing these cars are for mile munching. 2006 Mercedes CLS

But really finding it hard to fight the urge for a S/C...

its great when people bend over backwards to help, its a very rare thing nowadays...glad you got back ok now its getting that pipe at a reasonable cost...i suppose you'll be getting breakdown cover now...

i did a 500 mile round trip to the lake district last weekend with [luckily] no problems, mind you mines a diesel lol... ... - .- -.

Yeah it was nice that they basically dropped everything to get it sorted for me. As you say, doesn't often happen these days.

Breakdown cover is on the list of things to get sorted, usually we wouldn't need it because if one of the vans break down, I'll just use the Rangie with the solid bar to recover them, and if the Rangie breaks down, use the van with the solid bar, it's just for when I'm away from home I'm stuck  2006 Mercedes CLS
