Trommel, I can see good reasons that bikes should have lights, but I have never heard of pedestrians being killed by bumping into a dog, pushchair or another pedestrian.

You clearly have your views but please don't presume just because I fit daytime lights to my car that I "maybe" want people to look at my flashy car etc.

It would appear the so called Eurocrats are not alone in the use of daytime lights, as Canada, Norway and Russia have daytime lights and they are not in the EU, so please don't blame the EU for this, there's plenty of more important things they are to blame for. Also not all countries in the EU have implemented mandatory daytime lights for instance Austria.

It is more of a regional thing with countries in higher latitudes with lower light in winter day time that benefit most from daytime running lights.

It's a shame you cannot see the benefit and assume that those that fit daytime lights are attention seeking. While in reality I cannot speak or assume to know why others retrofit daytime running lights. I can only speak for myself and can state categorically that my daytime lights were fitted with just safety in mind.

So why do new cars have daylight running lights at the front and not at the rear also , as there are more accidents of people running into the back of vehicles ....

You will notice that early DRLs did have the rear side lights on as well. This stopped in 2012 I think and now just the fronts are on. I suppose this was done to stop people having just DRLs on after dark rather than switch their normal lights on as DRLs dazzle in the dark unless they are dimmed when the normal lights come on.
