What makes a RR Different?

I'm just curious. I've had countless RRs and other vehicles since I was 17! 9 or 10 I think.

Only five years, I like to change!

However I've always ended back with the RR. What is it that makes these cars different than all the others?

I can't quite but my finger on it, perhaps I have yet to find something which does every as well as a RR in one overall package.

New Zealand 2010 Range Rover Autobiography 5.0 SC V8 Galway Green

Well, either a high percentage of us are masochists for getting a car that is likely to give us technical grief at some point of the ownership Laughing or it is the brilliant design.

The design of the Classic and L322 is IMHO iconic and very beautiful. Now a Landcruiser is also iconic but not very beautiful IMHO. Looking at the Range Rover is like looking at a Ferrari (not all of them), Lambo (definitely not all of them but some are just mindblowingly gorgeous), E-type, try to explain why the designs are special and you will fail to put it into words. The P38 and L405 are less iconic and more average looking. The Classic and L322 are standing out from the crowd wherever you put them.

The other aspect I love about FFRRs is the combination of incredibly good off road capability (independent tests show it again and again that these cars are just brilliant off road monsters, best in class usually) and super comfortable and luxurious onroad ability. There are just no cars that can combine these features this well.

And lastly, obviously this forum is full of people that like the design while I bet there are plenty of people that don't like FFRRs at all (apart from the overgreenies). They like cars like the Princess or Austin Allegro and that is fine (just as long as they go live on a deserted island with their cars).

I have loved the FFRR since the Classic, love the L322 and like the P38 and L405 (and even the new sport and new Disco). My perfect garage (not that I can ever afford that) is filled with a Classic (4 door, soft dash, Vogue etc. like my old one black exterior, sand interior), my current 5.0 SC, a Lambo Murcielago Spider, an Aston Martin Vanquish and a La Ferrari (silly name but gorgeous car). Even more unattainable but also a perfect car to have is the Lambo Reventon !!

Hope this helps answering your question Smile MY 2010 5.0 SC Galway green and sand interior!!
Have the Faultmate MSV2 Extreme to be tinkering with the settings etc. !!

Great answers.

I think that it also carries a more dignified status in design and character. It can be multiple things for multiple purposes. Smart and dignified, rugged and capable, robust and secure. Not many cars are such all rounders and the Range Rover has an understated design element, not bragging or shouting out about what it can do, a very stereotypical British trait.

Almost like a car version of Bond. Tom

Its not only a practical car but a classy car, and one hell of a nice place to spend time behind the wheel or as a passenger. Its one of the few cars that does it all, you can have prestige and class, as well as something to get you across muddy fields and deep water, and it will tow a few tonne of weight as well.

What else could you ask for?

Guys, I think you've all summed it up really well for me. I've had the Landcruiser and Discovery 3s in the past followed by everything from golfs to 530d and it's the RR that gets me every time.

I had a number of P38s, I liked them - however they broke a lot and even a die-hard Land Rover fan like me eventually loses patience. The L322 is a big step up from the P38, but driving both the Classic, P38 and L322 (No L405 Yet) - I can see how these cars have developed.

Whilst I could have taken the Landcruiser into heavy muck and then go into town, it always still felt abit out of place. The RR fits in perfectly where-ever and when-ever and that's something which I love about it. I don't think there is any other car which undertakes this task so well. It's just such a great car.

I've recently converted mine from a commercial to a camper (tax here in Ireland is mad) and I hope to do a write up sometime. I know very few if any of you will undertake it - however It still might make an interesting read.
