Changing over wheels. yourself or a friendly garage

Seems slightly daft to be posting this but this is my problem.

I`ve bought some new wheels with tyres off ebay and trying to find a place who will change over my wheels.

Usually I`d do it myself but dont fancy using the sissor jack and my trolly jack is a low entry (also low lift) and only rated for 1.25T.

Anyone know a freindly tyre shop/garage in East London or anywhere in London who will do it for me or do I just buy a decent jack and do it myself.

My local Independant can do it but not till next week and ideally i`d like it done for the weekend.

Alternatively anyone near East London who has a jack and could help me. Happy to provide some Beer money for your time.

Probably the easiest, most cost effective way is it to get the new wheels balanced (not a bad idea in any case) and just point ATS, Kwik Fit whoever to your FF for fitment. Whistle

I bet they won't be overly bothered, it's little if any extra effort on their part. Thumbs Up 2006 4.2 SC

Agree, just get a kwik fit to balance them and fit them back on for you, should be about £6-8 per wheel. There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

I had exactly same dilemma

I went to a big tyre place next to walthamstow dog track (site), had 4 wheel alignment on some fancy new machine, and all 4 new ones balanced and fitted.
Cost about £100 with the alignment, but wanted to ensure even wear, as original set were not wearing evenly.

I am east london also , have a trolley jack and a Mercedes
Sprinter jack...untried so far.
I'm no mechanic, and dont have axle stands...but you could borrow.

Currently away till Sunday ... Alcohol and eBay is never a good mix

you will be surprised how much tyre shops will charge you for fitting wheels/tyres......i would spend the money on a decent trooly jack and do it your self,at least you'll know its done properly.. ... - .- -.

One off, I'd go to a local tyre place as advised & have them balanced & fitted - it's exactly the same amount to work as if they balanced wheels on the car -that is, if you take them out of the boot & load the others yourself.

If you're sure they don't need balancing, then put the money towards a decent jack.

I swap mine over for winter & summer tyres on 3 cars, so a jack was a no brainer.

I've since found a local tyre fitter who will do balancing, punctures etc for beer money, but I still change my own just to save the hassle of lugging 3 sets down there.

Thanks guys. Does seem like the wheel balancing option is the best approach. I live in an apartment block so not ideal for a 40kgs trolley jack hence why I originally went for a lite weight one for my weekend car.

My local independent tyre place (Treadfirst in Saffron Walden, Thumbs Up Thumbs Up ) do this for me FOC because I favour them with all my tyre, exhaust and MOT business, so they're happy to kepp me happy. Also store my winters FOC over the summer and vice versa, so no lugging tyres and wheels around. Worth cultivating a good relationship with a local equiv. I never got any standard of "service" from KF or ATS. Graham

Booked in with Halfords on Sat for 4x wheel balancing and a cheeky air con service at the same time.
Should be ok as pretty hard to cock up doing these tasks.

I supervised the guy hooking up te air con and have left the wheels to be balanced. Have to go back this afternoon to get the wheels fitted.

Wouldnt feel confident just leaving the car there so took it away after air con done. Air con is icy cold (let's hope it stays that way). Fingers crossed for this afternoon. Worse case I'll just tell him I want to use there trolley jack and will change myself.

I feel for the people who arrived for a service booking.
