Morning, I had the love surprise of the battery light coming while driving yesterday. I plugged my iidtool in and it was showing 13.7-13.8v whilst the engine is running. I did notice a whirring the noise the day before which sounded like it was coming from the alternator as it didn't get louder with speed. Question is I'm away this weekend and have a 180mile trip home tomorrow. Do you think it will last or will the alternator just suddenly stop working?

The battery is a Bosch silver one that was fitted by the previous owner and it starts fine off it

Also what sort of price is replacement alternator going to be?

I wouldn't go anywhere in it and expect to get there, especially 180miles.

Probably on its way out but check the battery terminal for tightness for good measure!

About £350 for the alternator i reckon, plus fitting,not sure how difficult it is on a sc, gotta be easier than a tdv8 though! There is nothing that can't be fixed with a hammer😜😜

I will check the battery terminals just in case. I suppose luckily I have full aa cover if the worst happens. It's just the inconvenience of it really.

Hi well there's some good news it made the 180miles home. I had everything turned off all the way back so there was no load on the alternator. When the light came on it was sitting at 13.7v and occasionally the battery light goes out and the voltage goes up to 14.5.

I called the aa out when I arrived home and they confirmed it was the alternator. So I will book it in tomorrow at the local indie and get a new one fitted.

The only fault code i was getting with my iidtool was transfer case voltage low which I guess makes sense.

Is the alternator for yours the same as one for a 2007 (presume it is)?

I'd be interested to know what the part and labour cost for fitting will be if you didn't mind?

Well alternator replaced with a nice shiny genuine replacement had the belts done aswell. Still waiting on price as my local indie is a friend so I get the bill when ever they have time to type it up. Another job done. The difference between theory and reality is that in theory it will work.

As Dave's alternator problem is solved I will continue the thread rather than opening a new one.

I have an intermittent battery light coming on, the voltage readings varying a lot. I have seen 14.3V, up to 15.1V and the last time I tried it was 13.3V.

So it looks like it is new alternator time

I am just about to order a new Denso from Dan. On the basis that this is a 4.2 V8 SC (not TDV8) which belt(s) should I change whilst the alternator is out? Are there any belts that are good practice to change whilst it's in bits?

Hi Skot it was just the one alternator belt I had replaced. Excuse my ignorance it was what ever belt drives the alternator. Hope that helps.
