Obviously a common issue - a few years ago, I left my defender ( cr p 19J turbo diesel) with a fuel injection 'specialist' who had been recommended to me for new injectors to be fitted while I was in Italy on business for a week.

When I got back, there was an extra 2,000 miles on the clock

Fortunately, it had been to my independent for a service the day before it went to the fuel injection place, and they were able to verify the mileage The fuel injection people started to try and wriggle out of it, but once they had received a solicitors letter and the threat of trading standards and the local rag, they decided to settle my claim for unauthorised use of my vehicle at 50p per mile

I have also been in the trade for 25+ years and seen most things. When i used to be a HGV mechanic years ago one of the younger lads decided that as he had just passed his class 1 test he would roadtest a Volvo FH16 tractor unit via his girlfriends parents house to showoff. 2 Hours later and he had not returned so the weekend foreman rang him to see where he was. Turned out he had tried to turn the volvo round on a single track road outside his burds parents, ran 2 wheels onto the front garden and promptly sunk 6 tons of volvo upto the axles .
