Is there any benefit in having a static IP address .... ====================================

Two scenarios.

1. Internet facing. If you want to connect in to the site then it's essential.
2. On your home LAN. Not needed for browsing or general connectivity (use DHCP) but very useful for Windows printers. Graham

Got two broadband lines coming into the house Sky and Talk Talk , TT supplies it with a static ip address and basically just wondered what the difference is ..

Static would probably be handier through the server so that when i delete an e-mail on my phone it would also cancel them out on my Mac , iPad and Windows PC save me having to do the same process of deleting individually ....  ====================================

Errr, the static IP has nothing whatever to do with how your email services are set up...

Why bother with a static IP when you can get a free DyDNS name setup?

Its all i use with Sky and is much safer, Static IP's are becoming more and more costly as the pool dries up but for 99% of residential users there is no real benefit. FFRR MY06 facelift With TDV8 Alloys Zeros/ATR's

For what you describe email wise Mick, what you need to do is have your mailboxes setup as IMAP instead of POP3, that way the changes would replicate across all devices quite easily.

That was the reason for asking as an IT guy from a company up here told me that would be the best route to go down

Because my e-mail services are hosted by another company

Tell him to get a grip

The company that hosts your mail just needs to setup your mailbox as either an IMAP or an exchange mailbox and drag everything over from your current one if needed

Right so i have about 10 e-mail address's for various things , so you reckon i would be able to get them all synced together ====================================

Depends on your use of them to be honest.

If they are just for you to recieve email and not reply from then they could easily just be setup to forward to one address.

That one address is then shared between all devices and replicates all changes.

and btw you don't need a static IP, unless you're hosting your own mail servers, of course, seems a bit unlikely imho  Graham

As I mentioned earlier I was only going on the advice of the IT guy that came out and configured my server for me
