I remember my father telling me about one of his truck driving mates in the late 1950s who was hauling a load of sheet steel, father had passed him in the opposite direction, around the Carlisle area. My father was heading back from Covent Gardens after collecting a load of fruit for Glasgow when father arrived at Glasgow he was told his mate was dead. Apparently his mate had been giving it big guns going south from Shap, a car had pulled out of a side road and the mate had to slam on the brakes, the sheet steel came through the cab and sliced him in two.

On that same road my father was done for speeding, in a 3 cylinder Commer 10 ton truck, top speed down Shap was over 100mph if you had the balls for it (these engines used to de-coke themselves in spectacular fashion with sparks shooting out of the exhaust when the engine was on the overrun). He was stopped going up the other side and when it went to court he was charged for travelling at 46mph. Some 6 months later he met the cops who done him and asked why only 46mph and their reply was that they couldn't catch him in their Wolseley 15/50 (top speed of 80mph) so to get the charge to stand they just invented 46mph as it sounded reasonable and the judge would never have believed if they said that he was doing over 100mph and they couldn't catch him

Sure the same thing happened a couple of year back on the M8 at the Shawhead flyover but this time it was steel pipes ....

And as you and i both know no matter how much you think you have those tied down either with chains or ratchets they will still move ====================================

IIRC loads like that are meant to be loaded right up against a bulkhead on the trailer so that in such a case they have no movement to get momentum. I guess back then they ran open trailers as well Sad FFRR MY06 facelift With TDV8 Alloys Zeros/ATR's

Not all loads can be placed tight against the headboard as sometimes it could cause the front axle to be overweight

my old aunt told me a story 'bout a splinter, and told me off for laughing. a delivery guy in the 60's she knew, was unloading a truck, and fell off the rear, and landed on a sack truck, which had a pair of old oak handles, one was jammed up his 'one way street! they had to saw it off and take in to hospital, and had to have lots of surgery.
please, don't laugh. she'll tell you off too. Surprised
