Whats this worth??

Hi all,I am just about to take in PX as follows.....

FFRR 2.5DHSE 2001 Y plate,Met Green,Hand Stitched leather and so on.....no problems,FSH,160,000 miles,Taxed and MOT till 2011,very straight tidy car.

How much you reckon its worth to sell?? Question If you have nothing nice to say,say nothing at all.

sounds like a late P38 to me, if so its not worth that much compared to a L322, loads on ebay. i'd see what they are making on there and knock a chunk off for unforseen problems and profit

This would be a Range Rover P38 (not L322)

My guestimate would be a maximum of around £5K if its in VGCondition???
(but you may end up buying a problem -Value of cars has come down but cost of repairs hasn't)

What are you thinking/hoping its worth?...Would this be a P/X against your own car?

Its a difficult one to call with that mileage and without seeing car Whistle

They may be asking £6k but they won't be selling! This is (IMHO) the problem with RR's at the mo because there is nothing in the £6-12K price bracket. Either a very overpriced P38 or a rough early L322 and nobody in their right mind would want either!

Just my two penneth! Whistle

I know this isn't the question, but anybody wishing to spend that amount on an old RR is far better off buying a good Classic - far less to go wrong and far more desirable.

Neutral I think some of us L322 owners have become a little snobby with our opinions and values towards the older P38 model.

Going back to RRV's original question of how much his 2001 P38 2.5 DHSE with 160K might be worth to sell?

I do not think I was being unrealistic with my guestimate of around £5K providing that it was in VGC and had none of the usual problems present which we associate these cars with.

This model was way ahead of its time when first launched, its spec and capabilities were far superior than anything else offered by other manufacturers at the time. Indeed it was the only top of the range model that Range Rover offered for 8 years (1994 - 2002).

My own P38 (2000/Xreg 2.5DHSE - which I had for approx. 3yrs) did have its fair share of problems (air suspension failure & heater matrix pipe split) but once these were fixed this vehicle didn't put a foot wrong for the last couple of years I drove it, and cost me no more than a couple of grand to have these faults fixed by a main dealer.

As I understood it - RRV explained his car was a good example which had a high mileage of 160K on the clock. It could not have been that much of a problematic car if it had covered those miles within approx 9 years - plus there is a good chance many of the usual faults might have occured and have since been fixed and has been regulary serviced when required.

The 2001 2.5DHSE would have been one of the last off the line with the improved Bosch electrics and the superior BMW Turbo Diesel engine.

I think the other estimated values of £2k or £3K are a bit harsh (maybe correct for 4.0 /4.6 Petrol engine with those miles) but unfair when RRV is trying to consider a value to sell his for best price.

He has since revealed he would accept £4500 for the car and I hope he is successful (and i'm happy I didn't insult his intelligence with my suggestion)

It could still make an excellent family car for someone - and (with the help of eBay) would be cheaper to maintain than they used to be, should something go wrong. I would still happily consider a later spec P38 if my car budget was about £5K

Whistle
(now go and sell that Range Rover RRV and don't make me look foolish - lie (clock it) if you have to!)

Delamo,

Thankyou very much indeed for your thorough guidance & help.I now have the RR in my ownership & it actually has TWENTY EIGHT STAMPS in the service book!!!!ALL LR & Rimmer Bros.It is the BMW engine & has Bosch electronics too.A very late Y reg 2001 in superb condition.

Its fair to say your "guestimate" is also around what I will be looking to collect on the RR so hopefully we are both correct.

Thankyou once again it is very much appreciated.

RRV Thumbs Up Bow down If you have nothing nice to say,say nothing at all.

Sounds like a peach. The engine will be tip top with all that servicing. Done every 5k with good quality oil will result in an engine that's still within tolerances for new.

I think 2001 got the upgraded lights as well, making it even more desirable. 5k is a fair price Thumbs Up

Edit: I remembered a test that mobil 1 had done on servicing. Pasted below.

Million Miles
Imagine Driving Your Car For One Million Miles. It Would Take Forever!
In 1990 Mobil conducted an extraordinary experiment with Mobil 1 - the Million Miles Test. At Mobil's research center in the United States, a new BMW 325i, with a 2.5ltr in line 6 cylinder engine, was filled with Mobil 1, and then run continuously day and night for the next four years - stopping only for routine maintenance and servicing.
The BMW spent four years on the treadmill, 24 hours a day, mostly at 85 miles an hour but with varied speeds - down as low as 45 miles an hour to simulate everyday driving.
After the equivalent of a million miles of hard driving, the engine was stripped and examined. What they found was astonishing: there was no sign of any significant wear. Not only was the engine still in excellent working order, most parts were still within BMW's tolerance for a new engine!
Shocked
